John Southgate was born in Buxton, Norfolk Co., England, March 7, 1856. His mother died when he was a little boy and having no home went with his grandfather sailing on a trading vessel. He sailed the salt water until eighteen when he came to America. He came to Unionville in 1875. In 1881 he began in the fishing industry and has continued in it since. The biggest fish he ever caught was a 151 lb. sturgeon which he caught four years ago. In 1883 he bought his 72 acre farm on the Bay Shore at Bay Park. February 4, 1880, he was married to Miss Sophia Reid. Mr. Southgate has been a correspondent since the days of the Unionville Sun.
