Fairgrove Village in 1987

Fairgrove's 20th-century history thus far has been similar to that of most Thumb villages of equal size, with one outstanding exception:  It has survived the 1960's exodus to industrial centers.  With a stable population since 1970 and a healthy business district, Fairgrove lives up to its name.  Tall shade trees line its village streets, and every store is occupied.  One elevator in town, another in the northwest part of the township and a fertilizer plant help maintain local economy.  Each Labor Day, Fairgrove hosts the Michigan Bean Festival, a 3-day event that draws residents from all over the state.  With cups of bean soup in hand, festivalgoers walk tree-lined streets, admiring the architecture of old, well-kept homes - and the new municipal building that houses the Fairgrove Township Library.
