The area that became Fairgrove coalesed into molten rock then hardened rock, was later covered by shallow seas then exposed to air again and eroded and grounded down countless times by weather and glaciers then had glacial soil from the mountains of the upper peninsula deposited on top of it and finally plants then forests grew for thousands of years. Primitive people lived here for thousands of years. Many extremely old burials have been discovered which are hundreds of years old. * Then came the most recent pioneers our own ancestors. If all time that the Fairgrove area land existed were reduced to a 12 hour clock we are living in the last fraction of a second on that clock. Long after we are all dead Brookside cemetery will be there. Our descendants will walk above us in the sunshine. Then they too will be buried there as the cycle of life repeats. Brookside will abide long after we are forgotton.
Before Brookside and other cemeteries there were many individual family burial places, some recorded most forgotten and now plowed or built over. The vast majority of these are now unmarked graves. Remember most of our ancestors were poor farmers trying to survive. There were no granite monument companies around, no stone cutters and no nice hardened tools, or sand blasters able to cut letters into stone until recently. They placed a rocks on a grave site and sometimes a wooden marker. The wood rotted away and the rocks were cleared by farmers years later who then plowed the ground for crops. This is true of over 99% of our ancestors. They lie in unmarked forgotton graves in land being used for something else by strangers who don't even know they are there. We have the chance here to at least record our ancestors graves and mark them. I recently purchased a marker to mark the unmarked grave of my great grandparents at Brookside. I would hope that families would consider at least placing a stone with their ancestors names that were buried there.
In 1850, there were only 291 inhabitants in the whole county, and only 300 acres of improved land. In the 1850's thru the 1880's the forests in Fairgrove were cut down and the flat rich soil became known which attracted settlers. The settlement of the Fairgrove area commenced in 1852 with the first settler Amzy Clay. Soon others came (from History of Tuscola and Bay Counties, Mich., H.R. Page and Co., Chicago, 1883, pages 131 -133) in 1852 Zepheniah Wilber, David P. Hinson and family, his brother-in-law, Nelson Vickery and family, and Mrs. Hinson's father, Robert McFarland and son John, 1853 Robert McFarland and son Andrew and step-son Charles E. Fonda. Miss Elizabeth Clay married John P. Wilber, son of Zephaniah Wilber. In the spring of 1854 Mathias Ringle and his wife settled in section 21, and his brother-in-law, Romanzo E. Goodnough and wife, in section 28. September 22, 1854, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ringle, a son, David, believed to have been the first birth in the township. The second birth was on October 2, 1854, William, son of John P. and Elizabeth Wilber.
According to James Kirk the Fairgrove Historian there was a Hinson cemetery about a mile and a quarter south of Brookside. The remains and stones were transferred to Brookside. The Kirk family had owned the land that is now Brookside cemetery which was turned over about 1898. Burials at brookside began around that time. Some of the stones moved from the Hinson cemetery do show older dates.

James Kirk – James Kirk died at his home in the town of Fairgrove, Feb. 3, 1892, aged fifty-eight years, of cancer. He was born at Antrim near Belfast, Ireland. He came to Oakland county at the age of twenty, and to Tuscola county when twenty-seven years of age. He represented this county in the State legislature at the time of death.
