1908

Watertown, February 14, 1908

The Sanilac Quarterly Meeting held with the Watertown church Feb. 14, 16. On account of severe weather there were only a few delegates present and a portion of the services were dispensed with. The meeting was called to order Friday afternoon at 3:20 by Rev. E. Sutphen. The 15th Chapte of John was read followed by Prayer by Re. E. H. Laugher. A. B. Ansted was elected clerk protem. Rev. R. J. Fields was elected moderator and Rev. E. Sutphen assistant moderator. The chair appointed the following named persons as Business committee W. McWilliams, N. McLeonnel and N. Shell it was voted to adjourn to the call of the chair. There was no services Friday evening or Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon the meeting was opened by Rev. Sutphen at 2.33, prayer by Rev. Fields. The minutes of yesterday was read and accepted. Letters were read from the Amadore and Kingston churches. Verbal reports were given from the Watertown and Freemont churches. Rev. E.A. Lougher then gave a report of the condition and success of Q. M. in India. The Business Committee recommended that the Sunday morning offering be left with the Watertown church. IT was voted to accept this part of the report. It was voted that Bro. Henry Keiler be member of Program committee. The committee recommended that the next Q. M. be held with North Branch church. Voted to accept report.

Rev E. Sutphen reported the condition of Oxford Q. M. It was voted that N. Shell be corresponding delegate to the Oxford Q. M. The W.M.S. elected Mrs. Charles Chase as member on Program. Committee voted to adjourn. Prayer by Rev. E.H. Lougher. Saturday eve. Rev. E. H. Lougher preached a gospel sermon from the 51st Psalm. Sunday morning a Business Session was called. After prayer a letter from Novesta church was read. The motions regarding the Q. M. and the members on the Programs committee were reconsidered and after amending them to read as follows they were adopted the next session of the Q. M. to be held with the Novesta church. Bro. Elmer Allen to be member on Program committee after a devotional meeting. Rev. e. Sutphen preached from the text Matt. 8:18.

Sunday afternoon the service was conducted by Rev. e. H. Lougher. Theme Manhood. Isa 58th chapter. Sunday evening there was a missionary service conducted in behalf of the W. M. Society by the Rev. E. H. Lougher.

Novesta, May 8, 1908

The Sanilac Quarterly meeting convened with the Novesta church at 3:00 p.m. Conference called to order by the clerk. The meeting opened by singing then on motion Bro. John Willerton was elected chairman of the meeting and opened the conference by prayer then singing. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Letters were read from the following churches, Novesta, Pigeon River, Kingston, Goodland, Watertown, Freemont, Clifford, Lamotte and Amadore, with verbal report from North Branch church by Rev. L. D. Boynton.

The following committees was then appointed by the chair. Business committee, Bros Wm. McWilliams, Walter Chase, and Robert Horner.

On motion it was voted to refer the location of the next Q.M. to the Business committee.

On motion it was voted that J. H. Swailes be clerk and Treasurer for the ensuing year and the salary to be fifteen dollars per year.

On motion it was voted that the collection by given to the Novesta church.

On motion it was voted that Bro. H. M. Keiler be corresponding delegate to the Oxford Quarterly Meeting.

Motion to adjourn to the call to the call of the chair. Prayer by Bro. L. D. Boynton. Friday evening preaching by Bro. Eugene Sutphen.

Saturday, May 9, 1908

At 10 a.m. conference called to order by Bro.Boynton with singing and prayer by Rev. John Willerton, followed by other short prayers, then singing after which several testimonies were given.

Then under the order of business a report of the business committee reported that they had located the next Quarterly Meeting with the Clifford church. On motion it was voted that Bro. Walter Chase be on the Program Committee for the next Q.M. The W.M. Society appointed Sister H. M. W. Keiler as Program committee. Motion to Adjourn.

10:30 a.m. preaching by Bro. Landon. At 2:30 p.m. a general covenant meeting led by Bro. J. H. Swailes, after which the Lord’s Supper was administered by Bros Boynton and Upper. 7:30 p.m preaching by Bro. L.D. Boynton for missions. Collection $3.25.

Sunday morning 9:30 a.m. Sunday school. 10:30 a.m. preaching by Bro. Peter Upper. Sunday 2:30 Young Peoples meeting with Program. 7:30 p.m. preaching by Bro. R. J. Fields.

Clifford, August 7, 1908

The Sanilac Quarterly Meeting convened with the Clifford Church. The meeting was called to order by he clerk at two thirty p.m.

On motion Bro. B. D. Boynton was elected chairman of the meeting and opened the conference by singing reading scripture and prayer by the chairman. The chair than appointed Bro. E. Sutphen as assistant. The minutes of last meeting read and approved. Letters were then read from the following churches, Clifford, Amadore, Goodland, North Branch, Novesta, Kingston, Watertown, and Freemont.

The chair appointed for the business committee Bros. Brodway, Osborn, and Willerton.

On motion it was voted that Bro. Wm. McWilliams be a member or the Pulpit committee for the next Quarterly meeting. The Locating of the next Quarterly Meeting was referred to the business committee. On motion it was voted that Bro. Boyle Preston be the delegate to the Michigan association. On motion it was voted that the Sunday collection by given to State Work and credited to Clifford church on their proportionment. In the absence of the Pulpit committee Bro. McWilliams was appointed on that committee.

Singing by the Choir then a testimony meeting followed and closed by prayer by Bro. Crouter of Marlette. Adjourned to the call of the chair.

Saturday, August 8, 1908.

At 9 a.m. a devotional meeting was called by Bro. John Willerton which was opened by singing and prayer by Bro. Boynton followed by other short prayers. Then a testimony meeting at ten a.m. The conference was called to order by the chair and on motion it was voted that Bro. Fields of Watertown be corresponding delegate to the Oxford Q.M. Bro. Lawarnce of Cleveland representing the State agent was present and was called before the conference to explain the plan of the Union between the two Baptist Bodies.

Motion to adjourn to the call of the chair. Prayer by Bro. Swailes. The Missionary Society met to elect officers. Mrs. Chase was elected a member on the Program committee for the next Q.M. 2 p.m. covenant meeting led by Bro. J. H. Swailes. 84 took part followed by the Lord’s Supper. 4:30 p.m. conference called by the chair. Prayer by Bro. Crouter. The committee report and recommend the next Q. M. be held with the North Branch church. The question of union was discussed for and against but nothing was done. Motion to adjourn. Prayer by Bro. John Willerton.

Saturday evening Woman Missionary Society with sermon by Bro. Lawance of Ohio.

Sunday ten a.m. conference meeting led by Bro. Willerton . At ten thirty a.m. preaching by Bro. Lawance. At 2:30 preaching by Bro. Crouter. Sunday evening preaching by Bro. L. D. Boynton. Collections $7.08.

North Branch, November 6, 1908

The Sanilac Quarterly Meeting convened with the North Branch church. Conference called to order by the Clerk. On motion Bro. Boynton was elected Chairman and opened the meeting by reading scripture and singing with prayer by Bro. E. Sutphen. The minutes of last meeting were read and approved. Letters were read from the following churches, North Branch, Clifford, Kingston, Amadore, Watertown, and Freemont.

On motion it was voted that the chair appoint the committees. The chairman then appointed Bro. Johnson on the program for the next Quarterly Meeting. For business committee Bros. H. Keiler, McWilliams, and Bro Erney Backons. Motion to adjourn to the call of the chair. Prayer by Bro. Preston. Friday evening preaching by Bro. Mark J. Vanbuskirk of Watertown.

Nov 8, 1908,

Saturday 10:30 the Woman Missionary society was called to order by the President Mrs. J. K. Stinton to transact business and elected Sister Patent as a number on the Program committee for the next Q. M. At 11:30 a.m. preaching by Bro. Roy C. Preston of Amadore. Saturday 1:30 pm. conference called to order by the chairman. Prayer by Bro. Sutphen. The State agent Bro. G.W. Meyer being present gave a good talk on different subjects. On motion it was voted that Bro. Sutphen and the clerk be a committee and instrumented to see or write Bro. Rosenberger and Bro. Vandewalker as to their standing as ministers.

On motion it was voted that the next Quarterly Meeting be held with the Kingston church. On motion it was voted that the collection be given to the State work. The corresponding delegates from the Oxford Quarterly Meeting was called for and was represented by Bro. George Diehl of Bruce church who gave a good report of that body.

On motion it was voted that Bro. Roy C. Preston be corresponding delegate to the Oxford Quarterly Meeting. A verbal report was given of the Canboro Oliver and Pigeon River churches by Sister J. G. Stanton of Oliver. A report was called for from the delegate to the Michigan association. Bro. Roy C. Preston made the report which was accepted. Motion to adjourn prayer by Bro. Diehl of Bruce. 2:30 pm. Covenant meeting led by Bro. J. H.Swailes after the Lord’s Supper was administered by Bros. Croter and Sutphen. 7:30 p.m. Woman Missionary Meeting with an address by Bro. J. W. Myers of Hillsdale. Sunday 9:30 a.m. prayer meeting by Bro. Boynton. At 10:30 a.m. preaching by Bro. Crouter of Marlette. Sunday 2:30 p.m. Young Peoples meeting led by the President Miss Ethel McKalap. Sunday evening 7:30 preaching by Bro. Eugene Sutphen. Collection $5.74.
