QUARTERLY MEETINGS

1909

Kingston, Feb. 5, 1908

The Sanilac Quarterly Meeting convened with the Kingston church on Friday At 2:30 p.m. Conference called to order by the Clerk. On motion Bro. E. Sutphen was elected Chairman and opened the conference by singing and reading scripture with prayer by Bro. Crouter of Marlette, singing. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Letters were read from the following churches, vis, Amadore, Freemont, Watertown, Clifford, Lamotte, Kingston, and Novesta. The chair then appointed Bro. Upper as assistant moderator. On motion it was voted that Bro. McWilliams be a member on the Program committee for the next Quarterly Meeting. The chair then appointed the following committee on business. Bros. Willerton, Bro. Patent, and Bro. Vanbuskirk. On locating the next Quarterly Meeting Bro. Alen Sister Evans, and Bro. Brown. On motion it was voted that the committee to look up the deliquent ministers in the Quarterly Meeting be continued for one year. On motion it was voted that Bro. Sutphen be the corresponding delegate to the Oxford Quarterly Meeting. On motion it was voted that the Quarterly Meeting collection be given to old Sister J. K. Williams by request of Bro. Willerton. On motion of Sister Patent it was voted that the Quarterly Meeting give to the Lamotte church towards completing their church sheds the sum of twenty five dollars.

Motion to adjourn to the call of the chair with prayer by Bro. Upper.

Saturday, Feb 6, 1909.

At 9:30 a.m. Prayer and Praise service by Bro. Sutphen. The chair then called the conference to order. The report of the corresponding delegates to the Oxford Q. M. was called for. Bro. Preston made a good report of that body and report adopted. The Locating committee reported that the next Quarterly Meeting would be held with the Watertown church.

Motion to adjourn, prayer by Rev. Vanbuskirk. The Woman Missionary Society was called to order by Sister Patent by reading scripture and prayer by Bro. Sutphen. After transacting their business they elected Sister Backus on the Program committee for the next term then adjourned.

Saturday, 10:30 a.m. preaching by Bro. Vanbuskirk. At 2 p.m. a general Covenant meeting led by Bro. J. H. Swailes after which the Lord’s Supper was administered by Bros. Upper and Willerton. At 7:30 p.m. preaching by Bro. John Willerton.

Sunday morning 9:30 Sunday School, 10:30 preaching by Bro. Preston of Amadore. 2:30 p.m. Young Peoples Meeting by sister Ether McKelop, President of the Young People Soc. 7:30 p.m. preaching by Bro. Vanbuskirk followed by Bro. Preston and Sutphen. Collection $8.65.

Watertown, May 7, 1907

The Sanilac Quarterly Meeting convened with the Watertown church on Friday at 2:30 p.m.

The meeting was opened by Bro. Sutphen after singing "More About Jesus". Bro Sutphen read scripture lesson from the 23 Ps. and offered prayers, after which Bro. Vanbuskirk was appointed chairman and Roy L. Preston was appointed clerk pro tem. On the account of the absence of the clerk the minutes of the last meeting were not read. The letters that had been handed in were read. A motion was made and carried that the Pulpit committee act as business committee. A motion was made and carried that Bro. Backus be the member of the Business committee. A motion was made and carried that the moderator appoint the Locating committee. A motion was made and carried that Bro. Sutphen be assistantant moderator. The moderator then appointed Bro. Preston, Bro. Van Horn and Sister McKelap to act on locating committee. A motion was made and carried that Bro. Preston be corresponding messenger to the Oxford Quarterly Meeting. A motion was made and carried that the Sunday morning collection be left with the Watertown church. After the reading of another letter the meeting adjourned until the call of the chair closed by singing.

Friday evening Bro. Preston preached from the subject of the double standard using Gal 3:28 as his text.

Saturday, Morning May 8.

Morning session was opened by Moderator, after a devotional service. The following business was done. A motion was made and carried that Bro. John Swailes be clerk and treasurer of the Sanilac Q. M. for the coming year. Upon the request of Mr. Preston he was given the power of appointing a substitute to act as corresponding messenger to Oxford Q.M. Business meeting then adjourned after which the pastor of the Free Methodist church Bro. Barnes preached an excellent sermon from Titus 2:11.

Saturday p.m. Covenant meeting was led by Bro. Preston after a short prayer service Bro. Preston read as the scripture lesson the first chapter of James. Following the lesson nearly all the Christians present spoke from and gave testimony for Christ after convenant meeting the communion service was conducted by Bro. Osborn and Sutphen, after which Bro. Sutphen extended to Bro. Bruce Brown the right hand of fellowship and nearly all of the members present greeted him into our body as a full member by a harty hand shake. Following this a short business session was called. The Locating committee then gave their report that the next session of the Quarterly Meeting convene with the Amadore F. B. church. The report was accepted. Meeting adjourned, dismissed by Bro. McWilliams. The Q. M. C. E. then had a business session.

Saturday evening Bro. Sutphen preached a missionary sermon from John 4:35 which was of great spiritual benefit.

Sunday, May 9, 1909.

After a session of the S. School. Bro. A. Osborn of Melvin preached an inspiring sermon from Matt: 5:13. Sunday afternoon the Quarterly Meeting C E. met in their regular Quarterly session with President in the chair. A fine Program was rendered which was very helpful and inspiring. Sunday evening, Bro. Sutphen preached an excellent sermon along Evangelistic order from Rev 3:20. Thus the closing session of the Second Convention of the Sanilac Q. M> came to a close leaving those that were present in better condition to do the whole will of God.

Amadore, July 30, 1909

The Sanilac Quarterly Meeting convened with the Amadore church. Meeting called to order by the clerk. On motion Bro. Roy E. Preston was elected chairman of the meeting. The conference opened by singing, "More About Jesus", and reading the 14 Psalms with prayer by Bro. E. Sutphen followed by other short prayers. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Letters were then read from the following churches (vis), Amadore, Goodland, Kingston, and Novesta. In the absence of the Pulpit committee sister Vohees and Bro. Sanderson was appointed to fill vacancies. The chair then appointed on the Business committee Bros Clarkson, Sutphen, and Carsertt.

On motion it was voted that the Business Committee act as locating community.

On motion it was voted that Bro. E. Sutphen be delegate to the Oxford Quarterly meeting.

On motion it was voted that Bro. Roy C. Preston be delegate to the Michigan Association.

On motion it was voted the Sunday morning collection be left with Amadore church.

Motion to adjourn to the call of the chair. A short conference session was then led by Bro. Carsatt. Friday evening preaching by Bro. L. W. Tounsand of Brown City, from John 21:11.

Saturday 10 a.m. July 21, 1907

Conference called to order by the chair. Opened by singing and prayer by Bro. Backons and Preston reading scripture lesson John 15 Chapter. A report from the Locating committee was called for. The committee reported that the next Quarterly Meeting be held with the North Goodland church.

On motion it was voted that Bro. W. P. Clarkson be a member of the Pulpit committee for the next term. Nothing further motion to adjourn.

The Woman Mssion Society held a short session with Sister Susie Vohess in the chair. Sister Clarkson was elected as a member on the Pulpit committee for next term. At 11 a.m. preaching by Bro. E. Sutphen from Ephesians 1 Cha 13 & 14 vers.

Saturday 2:30 p.m. a general Covenant meeting led by Bro. J. H. Swailes after which the Lord’s Supper was administered by Bro. E. Sutphen. At the close the Young Peoples held a business session. At 8 p.m. preaching by Bro. Clyne Missinite, Minister of Amadore, Sunday 10:30 a.m. preaching by Bro. Vanbuskirk. Sunday 2:30 p.m. Young Peoples meeting with Program. Sunday evening 8 p.m. preaching by Bro. E. Sutphen to a full house. Collection $3.53

Goodland, Nov 19, 1909

The Sanilac Quarterly Meeting convened with the Goodland Church at 2:30 p.m. Conference called to order by the Clerk. On motion Brother L. A. Townson was elected chairman of the meeting. Then opened the conference by singing and reading scripture from John 15th and prayer by Bro. Roy C. Preston, followed by Bro. Sutphen. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Letters read from the following churches, (vis). Amadore, North Branch, Novesta, Kingston, and Clifford, with verbal reports from Freemont, by Bro. Preston. The chair then appointed Bro. E. Sutphen as assistant chairman. There was not reports from corresponding delegates. Bro. Myers the State Agent being present made a very fine report for the Michigan association. Responded to by Bro. Townson. The chair then appointed the following committee for Business committee. Bros Preston, Clarkson, and Leg. For Locating committee Ssters Ethel McKellop, Teaple and Vohees.

On motion it was voted that the collection be given to the State Work.

On motion it was voted that Bro. Sutphen act as corresponding delegate to the Oxford Quarterly Meeting.

On motion it was voted to adjourn to the call of the Chair, with prayer by Rev. Roy C. Preston. Preaching Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. by Bro. Sutphen.

Saturday 9 a.m. Nove 20, 1909.

Conference called to order by the Chair. Meeting opened by singing, Reading scripture by Bro. Myers of Hillsdale, Mich., with several short prayers then singing. A report was called for from the Locating committee, who reported and recommend that the next Quarterly Meeting be held with the Novesta church. On motion it was voted as recommended and on motion it was voted that Bro. Elmer Allin be a member of the Pulpit committee fir the next term. Bro. L. W. Slaton corresponding delegate from the Oxford Quarterly Meeting was called for and gave a fine report of that body. The meeting then adjourned and the Womans Missionary Society called to order and held a short session and elected Mrs Robert Harner as a member of the Pulpit committee for next term.

11 a.m. preaching by Bro. Preston.

2:30 p.m. a general Covenant meeting led by J. H. Swailes after which the Lord’s Supper was administered by Bros. E. Sutphen. At the close the Young People held a short session.

Saturday evening woman mission society held a meeting. Bro. Myers gave the address on missions with collection.

Sunday 10 a.m. Prayer and Praise service by Bro. L. W. Slaton of the Oxford Q. M. 10:30 a.m. an address by Bro. Myers of Hillsdale. 2:30 p.m. Young Peoples meeting with Program led by Sister Ethel McKellop. Sunday Evening Preaching by Bro. L. W. Slaton. Colleciton $5.17.
