QUARTERLY MEETINGS

1912

Clifford, February 2, 1912.

The Sanilac Quarterly Meeting convened with the Clifford church on Friday 2:30 p.m. Conference called to order by the clerk. On motion it was voted it was voted that Bro. E. Sutphen act as chairman. Conference opened by singing hymn number 40, lesson part of John 15 and prayer by Bro. Sutphen. The minutes of the last session read and approved. Letters read from the following churches, vis, Clifford, Freemont, Novesta, Waterton, Kingston, and North Branch. The following committees were elected by vote.

Business committee. H.H. Andrews, Jessie King and Wm McWilliams. Pulpit committee, Sister Johnson, Bro. McWilliams, and E. B. Ervin.

On motion it was voted that the Sunday collection be given to the Foreign mission fund. A report of the corresponding delegates to the Oxford Quarterly Meeting was given by Bro. J. King and Andrews. No delegate from that body being present, no report.


On motion it was voted that Bro. Sutphen be delegate to the Oxford Quarterly Meeting at its next session in February. A motion to adjourn to the call of the chair with prayer by Bro. H. H. Anderson.

Friday evening preaching by Bro. Jesse King followed by Bro. John Willerton with a conference meeting.

Saturday, 9:30 a.m. conference called to order by the chair by singing and prayer by Bro. John Willerton. Under the order of business the locating committee reported that the next Quarterly Meeting be held with the Freemont church. On motion it was voted that the report be accepted.

On motion it was voted that Mrs. Irvin Doan be a member of the Pulpit committee for the next term. Motion to adjourn with prayer by Bro Preston.

10:20 the Womans Mission Society called to order by the Secretary Miss Susie Vohies. Scripture reading by Bro. Andrews and prayer by Bro. Willerton. Minutes read and approved.

On motion it was voted that Mrs. Alie Brown of Freemont be one of the Pulpit committee for the next term. Motion to adjourn with prayer by Bro. Preston.

10:40 a.m. preaching by Bro. Anderson, service opened by singing, reading second chap of Eph. by Bro. Preston. Prayer by Bro. Willerton. Singing hymn number 268 with several short prayers. Text 1 & 2 verses of 6 chapter Romans . Closed by singing hymn 346. Dismissed by Bro. Willerton.

Saturday 2:30 p.m. a general Covenant meeting led by Bro. J.H. Swailes with 69 testimonies for Jesus. After which the Lord’s Supper was observed by Bros H. H. Andrews and John Willerton to a full house.

Saturday evening 7:30 the Woman Mission Society opened by singing and reading scripture lesson and prayer by Bro. Andrews. Sermon by Bro. John Willerton an missions with collection followed by testimony meeting. Sunday morning 10:30 a.m. Prayer and Praise service led by Bro. Sutphen.

At 10:45 a.m. the regular service opened by singing and reading scripture lesson by Bro. H. H. Andrews with Prayer by Bro. John Willerton. Sermon by Bro. Preston.

The afternoon service by the Young People Society with a fine Program led by the President Miss Ethel McKellop, after which a business meeting was held to elect officers for the Young People Society.

At 7:30 p.m. the evening meeting was opened by Singing, reading scripture lesson and prayer by Bro. Andrews. Sermon by Bro. Eugene Sutphen with a grand after meeting of testimony for the Master. The Sunday morning collection was $3.97

Bro. J. King presented a bill of $3.50 which was allowed and paid for traveling expenses.

Freemont, May 3, 1912

The Sanilac Quarterly Meeting convened with the Freemont church at 2:30 p.m. Conference called to order by the clerk. On motion Bro Townsand was elected chairman and called Bro. E. Sutphen to lead the devotional part of the meeting which was as follows: singing, reading scripture lesson and prayer. Then singing "Showers of Blessings." The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Letters read from the following churches, vis, Freemont, Kingston, Clifford, North Branch, and Novesta. The following committees were elected by vote. Committee on Business: Bros. R. C. Preston, John Shell and Sister Doan. Locating committee Bro. E. Sutphen, Shell and Holcomb.

On motion it was voted that Sister Holcomb be a member of the Pulpit committee.

On motion it was voted that Bro. J. H. Swailes be clerk and treasurer for the coming year.

On motion it was voted that the Sunday morning collection be left with the Freemont church.

On motion it was voted that Bro. Sutphen be corresponding delegate to the Oxford Quarterly meeting.

Motion to adjourn to the call of the chair. Closed with prayer by Bro. R. C. Preston.

Friday evening preaching by Bro. McFarland of Brown City.

Saturday May 4, 1912, conference called to order by the chair. Meeting opened by singing hymn 91 and prayer by Bros Holcomb and Corarst of Croswell followed by singing. Under the order of business the committee reported and recommend that the next Quarterly Meeting be held with the Novesta church.

On motion it was so voted. A letter was read from the clerk of the Womans Mission Society giving a report of their last meeting. No members of that society being present no business was transacted conference closed.

At 10:30 a.m. preaching by Bro. E. Sutphen. Meeting opened by singing reading scripture lesson 3rd chap of John, singing with Prayer by Bro. A. Osborn of Melvin. Singing 2 verses of No 1, text 5 chap Romans, 4 vers.

Saturday 2:30 p.m. a general Covenant meeting led by Bro. J. W. Swailes, after which the Lord’s Supper was observed by Bros A. Osborn and E. Sutphen.

Saturday evening preaching by Bro. Osborn.

Sunday 10:30 preaching by Bro. Sutphen. Sunday 2:p.m. Young People meeting. Sunday evening preaching by Bro. Preston.

Novesta, August 23, 1912

The Sanilac Quarterly Meeting convened with the Novesta church at 2:30 p.m. Conference was called to order b Bro. Willerton with singing and prayer by Bro. Sutphen and Bro. Preston, and Bro. Willerton. Then singing hymn 453. On motion Bro. Willerton was elected chairman of the Quarterly Meeting. The minutes of the last meeting called for and read and approved. Letters were read from the following churches, vis, Novesta, Kington, North Branch, Clifford, Lamotte and Watertown. On motion it was voted that the Chair appoint the committees. The chair appointed on business Bro. Robert Harner, Sutphen, and Biddel. On motion it was voted that the Locating of the next Quarterly meeting be left with the Business committee. On motion it was voted that Bro. John Willerton be delegate to the Michigan Association. On motion it was voted that the Sunday Morning Collection be left with the Novesta church. Motion to adjourn with singing hymn 125. Prayer by Bro. Willerton.

Friday evening song service by Bro. B. C. Preston. Preaching by Bro. Western of Shebbona M. E. minister followed by Bro. Preston.

Saturday morning 9 a.m. conference called to order by the chair. Meeting opened by singing hymn 251 with prayer by Bro. Sutphen, Bro. Allen and others. Then singing "Stand Up for Jesus", with short testimony meeting singing " Bless be the Tie that Binds."

The Woman Missionary Society was then called to order by Sister Collins with singing reading of Scripture and prayer by Bro.Willerton. Minutes read. Election of officers. Pulpit committee for the next Quarterly Meeting, Bro. Elmer Allen. At this time the Locating committee reported and recommend that the next Quarterly Meeting be held with the Kingston church. Pulpit committee Sister McWilliams. At 10:30 preaching by Bro. R. C. Preston. Meeting opened singing hymn 352. Scripture lesson, Matt 25 by Bro Western. Prayer by Bro. Sutphen. Singing hymn 43, text 2nd verse of 25 chap Matt.

At 3 p.m. a general Covenant meeting led by Bro. J. H. Swailes after which the Lord’s Supper was administered by Bros Sutphen, and Preston. Saturday evening song service by Bro. Willerton then preaching by Bro. Sutphen for Missionary work with collection. Sunday 9:30 a.m. Sabbath School. 11 a.m. preaching by Bro. Glayzer of Hillsdale with collection.

Sunday 2:30 p.m. Young Peoples meeting led by Bro. Elmer Allen of Novesta with a good program. Sunday evening preaching by Bro. R. C. Preston.

Kingston, November 22, 1912

The Sanilac Quarterly Meeting convened with the Kingston Church on Friday, at 2:30 p.m. Conference called to order by the Clerk.

On motion Bro. E. Sutphen was elected chairman of the meeting and opened the conference by singing and reading. Scripture lesson and prayer by Bro. Peter Upper. Then singing. Under the order of business the minutes of the last meeting was read and approved. Letters from the following churches were read, vis, Kingston, North Branch, Novesta, Clifford, and Watertown. On motion it was voted that the chair appoint the committees. Business committee Bros J. F. Thompson, W. C. Holcomb, and King. Locating committee Sister Tibbles, Sister Holcomb and Bro. E. Ervin.

Pulpit committee for the next term Bro. R. Evens. On motion it was voted that the Sunday collection be put in the Quarterly Meeting treasury. Motion to adjourn with prayer by Bro. J. E. Thompson followed by testimony meeting led by Bro. Slough of Marlette.

Saturday November 23, 9:30 conference called to order by the chair. Meeting opened by singing hymn 571, reading scripture lesson by Bro. T. F. Thompson. Singing hymn 180 and prayer by Bro. E. Sutphen, followed by several short prayers, singing with some testimonies.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. A report of the Locating committee called for. The committee reported and recommend that next quarterly meeting to be held with the Clifford church. On motion it was so voted. Motion to adjourn with prayer by Bro. Slough.

At 10:30 a.m. the Woman Missionary Society was called to order by the President, Sister Johnson of Novesta. Under the order of business, Sister Keeler was elected Pulpit committee for the next term to be held at Clifford.

At 11:00 preaching by Bro. Slought of Marlette. At 2:30 p.m. a general Covenant meeting led by Bro. J. H. Swailes. The Lord’s Supper was administered by Bro J. F. Thompson of North Branch and Bro. Sough of Marlette. At 7:30 p.m. preaching by Bro. Schlabbouch of Elkton, a Mennonite, with a collect for missions of $3.78.

Sunday 9:30 a.m. Sunday school then at 11 a.m. preaching by Sister Hosner of Romeo. Sunday 2:30 p.m. Young Peoples meeting with Program. Sunday evening preaching by Bro. Shoemaker of the M.E. Church followed by Testimony meeting. Sunday collection $4.40.
