To Celebrate 98 Years Sunday
William L. Penfold, better known as "Bill"
was born Feb. 26, 1869 in Tyoga County, Waverly, N.Y. He came to Michigan in 1880. The
country was all wilderness. The Saginaw River was lined with saw mills.
He worked for the Wickes Bros, fitting saws in the Circular
Dept. He courted and married Mary Jane Sole in 1898. In 1902 he got a job with the
Williams Bros. Pickle Co.
Williams was the father of the former Governor and Bill knew him
well. That year they built a pickle plant in Wilmot. Later they expanded and built pickle
sheds all over the thumb. He was made district manager and had the entire thumb area to
look after. He rode a motorcycle down mud roads to get to these pickle plants.
In 1916 Williams Bros. went bankrupt and Union Trust Co. took over
to settle up the estate. He worked for the Union Trust Co. 1917 to 1918. In 1919 Libby
McNeill and Libby bought the Co. He worked for them until he retired in 1938. He was
director of the Wilmot School for 20 years after he retired from the pickle co.
He remembers the old stage coach line from Port Huron to Saginaw.
He worked all day for 50c, but pork was only 3c a lb. Butter 10c a lb. and eggs 10c a
dozen. They took their wheat to the grist mill and had their flour ground. They took so
much for grinding. People built their own log houses and barns out of logs by having a
building bee.
When Mr Penfold settled in Wilmot there was a saw mill, grist mill,
stove mill, shingle mill, livery stable, and also two stores. He has lived in the same
house for 66 years.
He drove a model A Ford for years and gave up driving at 95. He
said, "I never got a ticket and I didnt want one." His hobbies were
hunting and he bagged his last deer at 85. He was the oldest resident in Tuscola County to
apply for a license that year. This was his last hunting trip.
He played fiddle and sawed off many an Irish Reel after a house
raising bee. He loves music and last year on his birthday he sang for his great
grandchildren.
He is interested in world affairs and never misses the news on the
radio. He said, "only a few people live to be 98 and I am one of the chosen
few."
He will celebrate his birthday at home with his family of 6
children, 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren, on Sunday
Feb 26, 1967. His wife Mary Jane and a daughter Phyllis are deceased. |
