Cardinal Courier
No. 2
Following is a sampling of articles taken from old issues of the Cardinal Courier, the Kingston High School newspaper published by the school’s journalism classes. Articles from other sources are appropriately noted.
DO WE NEED A NEW HIGH SCHOOL?
(This article appeared in A COURIER SPECIAL “KHS Yesterday – Today – Tomorrow”. published in December, 1965. It originally appeared in the Courier in March, 1965. It was written by Mr. Thomas H. H. Dale, superintendent.)
Anyone having visited our school or conversed with students, teachers, or those who have visited, certainly have seen a critical need for improved educational plant to facilitate the training of your children.
As one views our present facility, one is surely struck by the overly-intensive use to which all areas are subjected. Teachers have difficultly calling a room “home” for more than the duration of one period, and rooms designed for specific subject areas, the use of the gym for general physical education for both boys and girls is restricted severly (sic) by the lack of adequate shower space and lockers units. Even the cafeteria is utilized whenever it is free. Toilet facilities adequate back in 1930 are certainly inadequate for our present relatively heavy enrollment.
The Superintendent certainly has a more difficult task of filling jobs from prospective teacher applicants. Lastly but most urgently, the state fire marshal has condemned the older part of the high school building, unless it is repaired and refurbished soon.
Architects have been asked about the feasibility of this, and have invariably stated that spending money on the old building would be throwing money down the proverbial rat hole.
Furthermore the feeling is prevalent here that the seventh and eighth graders would benefit from being separated from the Senior high students. Their presence with the older students tends to accelerate their precociousness and movement into the activity areas best reserved for senior high students. The devolves primarily into such areas as dating and such.
With the Senior high students in a new plant, the junior high would fit well into the newer part of the present high school building since the old pre-1900 section will of necessity be dismantled.
We urged all interested citizens to ban together with other progressive citizens of the community at our citizens meetings. We are not concerned actually, about “Do we need a school,” but how this may be achieved most expeditiously and efficiently as possible. Kingston is at the educational cross-roads. Do we take up the task and forge ahead or do we fall by the wayside?

KINGSTON HIGH SUFFERS DOUBLE LOSS
From the 1966 Senior Edition of the Cardinal Courier
Besides losing the great class of 1966 this year, Kingston High School will lose one of its best teachers.
Mr. Louis Wenzlaff, typing and physical education instructor at K.H.S. has resigned from his position to become the new manager of the Clifford branch of the Kingston State Bank.
Mr. Wenzlaff came to Kingston High in September, 1962. Since that time he has been a great help to the class of 1965 and 1966 as he was an advisor to both.
Mr. Wenzlaff’s advise to the graduation seniors is to “do the best you possibly can do in whatever you endeavor to do. The only way you can get to the top is by passing up the average person. Challenge yourself and take advantage of all opportunities when they arise…Don’t be a job jumper.” And prove yourself in each.”
Mr.Wenzlaff also stated, “I have enjoyed being part of the Class of 1966. They have been very cooperative and a class of which the school should be proud. I am sure they will be a great asset to our society.”
The Class of 1966 would like to thank Mr. Wenzlaff for everything that he has done for them. Kingston High School will certainly suffer a great loss.
Farewell, Mr. Wenzlaff!

the class of ’65 as seventh graders
Remember from Cardinal Courier No. 1 the Senior Class of 1965 as Fifth Graders. Well, here they are as Seventh Graders. (From the 1965 Senior Edition of the Courier.)
When our Seniors were in the seventh grade they were required to make safety posters. Some of the choice ones were hilarious.
Jerry Cassie drew a picture of six men hanging from the Gallows with the caption: “Don’t hang around with the wrong guys.”
Mary Rassette: “Don’t throw things around like darts, cause when they hit, Oooo it smarts.”
Bob Lester: “Don’t point a gun at somebody unless you mean business. Bob also had one showing a man jumping off a tall building with the caption: “Don’t try to make a splash on Broadway.”
The following ’65 seniors planned to attended Michigan State University: Thomas Kaminski, Dennis Koehler, and David Kolacz.
From the 1959 Cardinal Yearbook:
Kindergarteners pictured with their teacher, Mrs. Wingert, were: David Lalko, Christina Woodruff, Linda Crittenden, Michelle Brandibur, Milessa Mileski, Kathryn Darling, Daniel Wilson, Mary Ann Wilkinson, Edward Westerby, Glenda Vandercook, Terri Nickens, Bradley Grabill, Daniel Slack, Stephen Lalko, John Ellert, Kenneth Jacot, Daniel Bussure, Lorn Harneck, Kelly Hackett, Lorrie Ostrander, David Clothier, Nolon Nash. Not pictured were: Joseph Gottler, Bethany Green, Carmen Koehler, Debbie Randall, Shelley Schwaderer, Norma Simmons, Philip Thompson, Frederick Yens, Wayne Wilcox.
From the `1965 Cardinal Courier – Senior Issue – Class Will:
I, Dennis Koehler, here-by will Mary Lou Houghton my ability to brown nose Mr. Bradley and to get A’s in his classes like I do.
History of the class of 1967
In the year 1954 the great class of ’67 consisted of only16. These were Rod Kramer, Linda Lester, Randy Lyons, Ruby McAlpine Hill, Bob Plane, Dennis Randall, Sharon Galubenski, Linda Harneck, Sandy Heineman, Karey Henderson, Vicki Meliski, Jim Parrott, Becky Snover, Art Steele, Bruce Walls, and Philip Wolak. Rod Kramer was considered the champion hair puller and Linda Harneck was the best kicker.
When these 16 darlings started the 1st grade we had a few more additions. Marianne Lugowski, Jan Moore and ouf ourse our homecoming queen Barb Fox.
We made the second grade with pride. But some of the girls didn’t know if they’d make it because the boys treated the class at the Valentine’s party.
The third grade brought Susan Gray and Janet Walkiewicz. Then, not now, the champion spellers were Barb Fox, Randy Lyons, Phil Wolak, and Becky Snover.
The 4th grade was smooth sailing for our great class. We gained our class clown Becky Hunter. Bob Plane made a pattern of the Ursa Major constellation in the bottom of a coffee can.
The fifth grade brought Richard Cross, Mike Garbula, and Ronald Johnston. Sandy Heineman wrote a poem in this grade which was put in the school paper. It goes like this:
”There was a bird, Sitting in a tree, He always says Me, me, me. When he flies he bumps into eagles, He goes to bed and combs his head.”
In the sixth grade we had no additions but there was a budding romance in bloom between Rod Kramer and Barb Fox. Becky Hunter wanted to join a club, her initation was to kiss Mr. Walk.
We we started the 7th grade we were all standing in the hall, looking stupid, until Mr. Aho ushered us into the gym. In that frantic year we gained John Adamczyk, Alan Nickens, Linda Caverly, Cathy Franckowiak, and our Valedictorian Cheryl Kelley. Our float won first place that year which really boasted our morals.
In the 8th grade Sue Ross dropped in for a five year visit.
Eightteen new members joined our Freshman class: The Clifford group consisted of Kathy Chapel, Darrell Sarles, Norman Easton, Sue Ann Kelley, Susan Kelley, and Dennis Manier. Mayville’s contribution to the class was Dave Nichol. The next ten to come were Pam LaFond, Larry Clink, Kay Cooper, Vera Sabo, Larry Maynard, Manuel Sapien, Susan Traster, Judy Ross, and our class president Lonnie Bewernitz. Last but not least was our class pride and joy Anthony Williamson. In this year one of our teachers tried to get rid of us. But the explosion he planned in Biology class didn’t work, because he went first.
The 10th grade didn’t bring any new additions but I think we can all remember the building of our float in the old barn by the railroad tracks. Remember the party afterwards, kids?
Around the last of April our Junior Class was rather busy getting things around for the Banquet and Prom. GeneTait and Liz Denman came that year. Out theme for the prom was “Moonlight and Roses.” Our Junior Play was a smash. It was “Pick a Dilly” and Phil Wolak was our leading man.
Then came the year we’ve all been looking forward to. This year we were tops in everything except when we went on our Senior Skip Days we were all either sore from skiing at Mount Christie or wet from canoeing on the Rifle River.
The Homecoming was one of the achievements we accomplished. Our float came in first. Barb Fox won the crown over Liz Denman and Cheryl Kelley, but not without a close draw.
The Senior play was great. With a war hero, nosey neighbor, and a chicken farmer. The play was entitled, “The Groom Said No.”
The Seniors versus faculty basketball game was held, the faculty doing the winning. (We had brownie points up,)
Our class also set a record, that being five out of fifty two Seniors married and stayed on to fight it out.
What had een stated are the experiences of our class of 1967, some were great, some not so great, but we’ll always remember them all.
To close, we would like to say thank-you to all our teachers and others who have made our school years so much fun, most of the time.
