State Road Toll Drops
Sharply
February traffic deaths in Michigan numbered 93, a decrease
of 62 or 40 per-cent as compared
With 155 in the same month a year ago, according to State
Police provisional figures. It was the third month in a row to show a reduction in deaths
compared with corresponding months a year earlier. It was also the lowest February toll
since 70 recorded for that month in 1962. Februarys average for the five years is at
118 deaths.
The February count brought Michigans accumulated
fatality total for two months this year to 219 which was 83 or 27 per-cent fewer than 302
in the same period in 1966.
An important factor in the lowered tolls is believed to be
the curtailed travel due to the late January snowstorm in most of the southern Lower
Peninsula, say State Police. |

Its The Law March 10th
The red, triangular reflective emblem to designate
slow-moving vehicles should be attached on all farm tractors and farm machinery used on
highways by Friday, March 10, 1967.
State and local law enforcement agencies say the new law for
the State of Michigan requiring such emblems becomes effective on the aforementioned date.
As we have pointed out before in this newspaper these are
the rules.
1. The emblem must be displayed both day and night, when
traveling on public roads.
2. It should be located on the rear of the equipment,
centered if possible
3. The standard emblem should be mounted at a height of 3 to
5 feet to keep in the headlight beam range.
4. The emblem is only a supplement to adequate night
lighting and a side reflector requirements for slow moving vehicles.
5. Use of the emblem is prohibited on trucks, cars, or any
vehicle with a maximum speed potential of more than 25 miles per hour.
The emblems can be purchased from farm
implement dealers or from the local high school FFA Chapter.
Between 1963-1965 nearly 1,000 accidents involving farm
tractors or equipment on public highways were reported in this state. In two out of three,
the slow vehicle was hit from the rear. Nine of ten took place in daylight hours and on
open highways with good road, good visibility and good weather conditions. The motorist
frequently failed to recognize a slow-moving vehicle in time to avoid a collision.
It is hoped that this emblem will be recognized as a danger
signal as is the railroad "crossbucks". |
