Council Proceedings

A regular meeting of the Kingston Common Council was called to order by President Edward Kaminiski at 7:00 p.m. in the council room on May 1, 1967, with the following members present: Peter, Gettel, Lewicki, Brief, and Harmon.

Minutes of the previous meetings were read and accepted.

Minutes of the special meeting were read and accepted.

Mrs. Myrtle Diegel was present with a burning complaint. The Sanitation Department will see that the matter is cleared up.

The following bills were referred to the Audit Committee:

Moved Gettel, supported by Brief that the bills be allowed and orders drawn for same. Ayes – All, Nays – 0, Motion carried.

Moved by Gettel, supported by Peter that we accept the offer of Mrs Janis Hubbard to deed parcel of land over to the Village for center-of-way with approval under legal advise and counsel. Ayes – All, Nays – 0, Motion carried.

Moved by Harmon, supported by Peter that we accept the resignation of John Burns as councilman. Ayes – All, Nays – 0. Motion carried.

Motion by Gettel, supported by Harmon that we accept the resignation of Frank Schobert as Fire Chief. Ayes – All, Nays – 0. Motion Carried.

Motion by Peter, supported by Lewicki that we accept Atkins and Drillock as Village Attorneys for the period of 4/1/67 to 4/1/68 for a fee of $600.00 same to be paid immediately. Ayes – All, Nays – 0. Motion carried. The bill for $265.00 for the past year from them is to be checked further by Gettel.

Gettel presented 3 quotations for the filing cabinets. Moved by Brief, supported by Harmon that we accept the bid of $119.00 for the two cabinets. Ayes – All. Nays – 0. Motion carried.

Motion by Peter, supported by Brief that the Village not be responsible for the private drains. Ayes – All, Nays – 0. Motion carried.

Motion by Gettel supported by Harmon that we accept the following resolution. There is to be a charge of $50.00 tapping fee, a $25.00 deposit fee to turn water on for renters. When water account is six (6) months delinquent, the water is to be turned off with a forty-eight (48) hour notice of same. The bank is to furnish a list of the delinquent accounts monthly. Ayes – All, Nays – 0, Motion carried.

Motion by Gettel, supported by Brief that the following suggestions by the Fire Department and Fire Department Committee be accepted: the following men be appointed to the Fire Department, Harold Spencer, Eugene Diegel, Jim Mallory, John Lalko, and Art Warner. The door to the Village Hall is to be fixed. Purchase a new 16’ extension ladder for fire truck. Purchase 24 pair of insulated gloves to be given to each fireman. Howard Berry should start and run fire truck daily for at least five (5) minutes. This should commence as soon as exhaust system is installed by Village man to be approved by Fire Chief and Village President. Purchase a timer clock for whaling siren plus the necessary equipment so the siren does not operate at p.m. on Sunday. Any purchases to be made for fire department must have council approval. There is to be a complete yearly inventory of all fire equipment. There are to be several copies of rules, regulations, etc, adopted and enforced by Village Council made available to fire department. There is to be a review of the list of firemen, active and inactive. Have frequent drill practices held at different times, so all firemen can attend. All fire calls are to be submitted to Village Clerk the same day or following day of fire for recording and billing. Secure a book from U.S. Rubber Co. for reporting calls, etc. to State Fire Marshall. Fire Chief will take four (4) to five (5) men per week until fully instructed on how to operate all fire equipment and when completed state with a new group. Ayes – All, Nays – 0. Motion carried.

Motioned by Peter, supported by Harmon that Edward Kaminiski be appointed to serve on planning commission. Ayes – All Nays – 0. Motion carried.

Moved by Harmon, supported by Brief to adjourn meeting. Motion carried.

OBITUARIES

ANDREW BIRTHELMER

Mr Andrew E. Birthelmer, formerly of Rossman Road, Kingston, and a late resident of 108 Deen Blvd., Auburndale, Fla. Passed away in Morrow Memorial Hospital in Auburndale, on Monday afternoon, May 8th at age 79.

He was a native of Austria, coming to the U.S. as a young man. Later making his home in Detroit.

He was a retired police officer with 25 years of service.

Mr. Birthelmer was a member of the Lutheran Church, Kingston Lodge 430 F&AM, Puritan Chapter 456, OES Kingston, and Metropolitan Square and Compass Club of Detroit Police Department.

Survivors are his widow, Mrs Elizabeth K. Birthelmer of Auburndale, Fla.; one daughter, Mrs Irene Cary of San Josa, California; one son, Andrew M. Birthelmer of Northville; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. June 10th from the Kersey Funeral Home Chapel with Vicar Eledge of Grace Lutheran Church officiating.

Burial was in Lima, Ohio.

Kingston News

Mr and Mrs Eugene Rassette and Mr and Mrs Ernest Torongeau spent last week end in Detroit. Monday they attended the funeral of Mrs Delima Gendron of Allen Park.

Becky and Mary Schrader, Emily Adamczyk and Judy Penfold spent Saturday in Detroit.
Mr and Mrs Dennis Steele, Tammy and Jim and Brian Froede enjoyed the week end at the Caswell cottage located near Gladwin.
Mr and Mrs Wayne Schrader, Becky and Mary, Mr Charles Schrader, Susan and Greg of Marlette attended the double header ballgame in Detroit on Sunday.
Mr and Mrs Alton Lyons spent the week end with Mr and Mrs Earl Fortier in Lake City. The Lyons picked up Mrs Hunter in Cadillac and returned home Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Hunter reported it snowing on the way home.

Late News

Mr and Mrs Jim McCabe of Lansing were Sunday visitors of their grandmother Mrs Hazel Parker recently.

Cheryl and Shawn Parker of Jackson were week end visitors of their grandmother Mrs Hazel Parker.
Mr and Mrs Paul Torongeau and family, Ray Quiel, son Raymond and nephew David of Taylor enjoyed the week end at the Ernest Torongeau home.

Mr Wm Tong, Mr and Mrs Wm Knight and Billy of Detroit called on Mr and Mrs James Caswell on Sunday.
Mrs J. H. Hunter visited her sister Mrs E. Delle McCane in her beautiful home in Cadillac over the week end.
Mr and Mrs Stanley Prahin of Kingston were given a certificate of award by the Kingston High School attesting to the perfect attendance of their four children during the current school year.

Family Gathering

Family gathering in honor of Danny Lewicki who made his First Holy Communion Sunday, May 21st, at 7:30 mass at St Michael’s church.

Dinner was served at his home for 24 adults and 18 children picnic style. Card games and a baseball game was enjoyed by adults and the children between rain drops.

Father Ray dropped in to top the day. Family guests were from Detroit, Madison Heights, Decker, Keego, Taylor, and Marlette.

Danny was especially pleased to have his grandmother, Bernice Lewicki from the Marlette Hospital (Memorial Wing) with us for the day. She’s been a patient there for over a year for physical therapy. Danny missed his Godfather Eugene Hergenreder and family who could not make it due to illness.

KINGSTON NEWS

Mrs Douglas Ensign and children were Sunday forenoon guests of Mrs Basil Hudson in Marlette.

Mr and Mrs Van W. Burmeister, Larry, Robin, Connie, Terri and Jamie of Ludington were week end guests at the John M. Burmeister home.
Mr and Mrs Pat Miller of Centerline spent the week end at their farm on South White Road.

The Lloyd Spear family of Detroit visited at the home of his father on Saturday.
Christine Plane bowled at Rochester, New York over the past week end in the National WIBC tournaments.
Mrs Mabel Powell and Sylvia Dibble spent a few days in Grand Rapids at the home of Mr and Mrs Richard Dereszynski. While there they attended the Tulip Festival in Holland with Donna Bereszynski.

Mr and Mrs James Parker and children Mr and Mrs Dale Clement, Cindy, Roger, Mike and Tom of Chesaning spent Mother’s Day with Mrs. Hazel Parker.
Cecile Van Cleave of Mobile, Alabama is visiting relatives in the area.
Mr and Mrs Stanley Moore called on Mr and Mrs Ray Clark, an uncle of Mr Moore’s and a cousin, Mr and Mrs Merritt Clark of Pontiac.
Mrs Hazel Wilmot spent the week end with Mr and Mrs Dean Boyne in Leonard and attended the Mother and Daughter Banquet with Winnie. Mrs George Trask of Oxford the former Connie Wilkinson had the youngest daughter there.
