"Raccoon John" Smith the prominent frontier preacher, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. A. R. Ringo (Emily) on this date. The body was sent to Lexington, KY for burial next to his beloved wife Nancy HURT
Who preceded him in death Nov 04, 1861 Georgetown, KY. Rev. Smith preached all over Kentucky and
at an early point in his ministry, was introduced in Frankfort, KY as "Raccoon" John Smith owing to the fact that there were many John Smiths in Kentucky and Rev. Smith said he was from that part of the state
Were the raccoons were in large abundance. This cognomen was to stick with Rev. Smith the remainder of his days on earth. Rev. Smith and wife Nancy are buried in a prominent position near Henry Clay in the Lexington, Kentucky Cemetery, it is reported.
