Early Friday morning, January 19, 1940,
God in His infinite mercy saw fit to
snatch from the home of Mrs. Gertrude
McGregor two beloved sons, Henry
Maxwell and Archie Forrest McGregor.
Archie was born January 1, 1926 and died
in the flames that destroyed the family
home, early Friday morning, January 19,
1940. He was 14 years and 19 days old.
Max, as he was known to all, was born,
August 25, 1919 and departed this life
Saturday morning, January 20, 1940 at the
Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape
Girardeau. He was 20 years, 4 months and
25 days old.
They were preceded in death by their
father, Harlan McGregor in November,
1932. A small brother, Hardy Winfield
died in infancy.
They are survived by their widowed
mother, Mrs. Gertrude McGregor, four
brothers, Rexwell and Charley of Grassy,
Hadley of Puxico and Shelby of Iowa;
three sisters, Mrs. Zella Barnes of
Senath, Mrs. Drucilla Williams of Grassy and
little Charlotte at home; also an aged
grandmother, Mrs. Lou Billington, who at
the home at the time of the tragedy. Also
a host of relatives and friends who
greatly mourned their going.
We know that things in this life happen
that we can't understand, but we are glad
to realize that we have a just and
merciful God, "Who doeth all things well.” And
we leave Archie and Max in His hands
until we can meet them beyond this land
of sorrow.
Funeral services were held at McGee
Chapel Sunday afternoon, conducted by
Revs. Fred DeHoog and Willie Liley. And
as the sun was sinking in the west the
two brothers were lowered side by side in
the McGee Chapel Cemetery to await
the resurrection.
They are gone, but not forgotten,
By the friends who loved them well.
Memory of their smiling faces,
Linger `round where they did dwell.
Tho the home has been left broken,
Also their dear mother's heart,
We will meet dear Max and Archie
Where we again will never part.
