COLUMBUS KEENE                                                                                      [AHGP logo]

Columbus Keene was born 1843 in Maryland.  He was the son of Benjamin Keene and Jane W Waters (Parks?).

Columbus A.V.I. Keene Born July 1843 Died after 1900.

This full name is Columbus Americus Vespucci Independence Keene.    Now why in the world would you name a child this??     This information has been passed down and there is no solid proof this is the exact name.  However on several court records it lists his name as Columbus. A.V.I. Keene, therefore we know it was something strange!   Later in life he would sign his name C.V.Keene.

Columbus was the fourth son of Benjamin and Jane W. Keene.   We first find Columbus listed in the 1850 Census with the family of Benjamin and Jane W. Keene.

1850 Census – Dorchester, Maryland – District 1

Benjamin Keene age 45

Jane Keene age 37

Mary A Parks 18

Josiah Keene 11

Columbus Keene 8

Cornelius 6

Robert 3

Joseph  Parks/Harris? Age 18 -

(Either Harris or Parks.  It is very hard to read)

Columbus is later mentioned in Chancery Record Abstracts of Dorchester county, MD in 1852.

I have not been able to find Columbus in the 1860 Census or any record of him between the 1850 Census and when he is married in 1863.

On the court register in St. Joe, Mo the following listing was found.

Married on the 27th day of December 1863, Mr Columbus Keene to wife Saffronia Pate by Hirum Houser, JP.

Saffronia/Sophronia Pate has a whole mystery to herself.  This is detailed on the Sophronia Stuart Pate Keene Page.

Census records in 1870.

Buchanan County, Rush Township, Winthrop, Missouri.

Clambis Keene age 27, Born MD

Sophronia Keene age 22 Born Mo

Benjamin F. Keene age 6 Born Mo

George Keene age 3 Born Mo.

Much of this are notes to myself as I continue my research.  If you find any information you believe to be incorrect please contact me with the correct information.   I’d love to hear from you!     Debby
