History:
Cleveland township is the northwest corner of Callaway County, bordering on Audrain and Boone Counties.
The communities of Lindberg, Hereford, Stephens and Youngers are located in this area.
Lindberg became a communtiy as a result of Highway 40 in the 1920's. A service station was built there and later, in the 1930's, a coal company began operations.
Hereford Community-this area of northwest Callaway County was sparsely settled prior to 1890; names of some of these residents included Baker, Booker, Bratton, Dunn, Hume, Linden, McCray, McKamy, Moore, Murray, Tarr and others. The Rising Sun Christian Church was organized in the 1890's in Hereford. Farmrs in the area of Herfeford were well knwn mule breeders and raisers and would have a "mile drive" to local markets at McCredie [ another well known mule raising area] or to Centralia, in Boone county.
Stephens was known as Stephens Store [ yet today is sometimes called this], and was a thriving community on the 1880's. Located on a crossroads, the old St. Charles east and west road, and another going north and south. Coal mines in the area brought workers into the community.
Youngers is located at the far northwest corner of the township and county. Little to nothing remains of this communtiy. It was evidently named for Robert Marshall Younger who built a store there in the 1860's and also had a grist mill on cedar Creek. Hickory Grove church served as the center of community life.
