The body will remain at the Brinkopf-Howell Funeral Home until 1 o’clock Thursday afternoon when it will be taken to Christ Evangelical Church. The funeral service will be conducted there at 2 o’clock by the pastor, Rev. Ralph E. Weisser, and burial will be in Lorimier cemetery. Mr. Stein was born near Commerce on Jan. 9, 1857, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Stein. His father lived to be 104 years old, the eldest resident in the history of the county. He died six years ago at Jackson. Mr. Stein spent most of his life in Cape Girardeau. He owned and operated the Stein Milling Co. on Broadway where the old Montgomery Ward & Co. building is now located. Mrs. Stein died in 1922 and most of the time since he has resided with his daughter here. Besides Mrs. Kempe, Mr. Stein is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Wilson Oakes, of St. Louis, and two brothers, Louis Stein of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Fred Stein of Cape Girardeau. Comments:: The records of Trinity Lutheran Church, Cape Girardeau, show Gus Stein’s birth date as January 9, 1858, and his tombstone shows the birth year as 1858. Gus Stein’s wife was Mary D. Traupe (aka Dena Marie Traupe). The two daughters mentioned in the obituary were: Malinda “Linda” Stein, wife of Wilson Oakes; and Alma W. Stein, wife of Albert Kempe. Other surviving children of Gus and Mary not mentioned in the obituary were: Arthur C. Stein of Cape Girardeau; William C. Stein; and Gustav H. Stein, Jr. In addition to the two surviving siblings mentioned in the obituary, Gus had three siblings who predeceased him: Christian F. Stein, Jr.; William Stein; and Anna Caroline Alvina Stein, wife of George F. Siemers. Gus’s father, Christian Stein, died three months short of his 104th birthday.
