    Arthur C. Stein, 73 years old, a retired employe [sic] of the Marquette Cement Mfg. Co., and a lifelong resident of Cape Girardeau, died at 10 a.m. today at a hospital to which he had been admitted only a short time before. He had been in failing health two years and his condition had been serious for two weeks.

    The body was removed to the Walther Funeral Home.

    Mr. Stein is survived by his wife, Mrs. May Stein; a daughter, Miss Kathryn Stein, a teacher at Franklin school; two sons, Harry Stein of Webster Groves and Weldon Stein of Bethesda, Md.; two sisters, Mrs. Albert Kempe of Cape and Mrs. Linda Oaks of Ironton; two brothers, Wm. Stein of San Pablo, Calif., and Gus H. Stein of St. Louis, and four grandchildren.

    Born June 27, 1884 in Cape Girardeau, Mr. Stein was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Gus H. Stein. He was educated in the public schools here and in business college. On April 28, 1906 he was united in marriage to Miss May Sheppard. Mr. Stein’s grandfather, Christian Stein, lived until he was 103.

    Mr. Stein started work with the Frisco railroad as a telegrapher in 1903 in Cape. Later he was brakeman and train dispatcher at Chaffee until 1924 when he went to work at the cement plant as railroad yardmaster, a position he held until his retirement Aug. 31, 1949.

    Mr. Stein was a member of the St. Mark’s Lodge, A.F. and A.M. for a number of years and during that time served as worshipful master and was secretary for 10 years. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church and of the Railway Conductors and Brakemen Brotherhood chapter at Chaffee.

Comments: May (Sheppard) Stein was the daughter of John L. Sheppard and Margaret Elizabeth Howard. Mrs. Albert Kempe was Alma W. (Stein) Kempe, and Mrs. Linda Oaks was Malinda “Linda” (Stein) Oaks, wife of Wilson Oaks.
