Contributor: Kay Stein Date Sent: 16 November 2008 Decedent's Name: STEIN, Heinrich Christian Date Born: 21 May 1825 Date Died: 14 February 1929 Newspaper: The Missouri Cash-Book, Vol. 58, No. 38, Thursday, February 14, 1929, p. 1 Obituary: County’s Oldest Citizen Dies Here This Morning
Using his own language in a recent autobiography, “My name is STEIN, Christian STEIN, and I was born in Hanover, Germany, on May 21, 1825. I came to the United States, to New Orleans, to be exact, when I was 31 years old and a few years later came up the river to Cape Girardeau County where my brother lived. I have been here ever since.” He was twice married, the second time at the age of 80 years, when he married Catherine RAHMUELLER. He spent the major portion of his life in this county at Gordonville where he was a member of the Lutheran Church, the congregation of which gave him, together with members of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Jackson, a large celebration on his 102 birthday at the former place. He was presented with a gold-headed cane which he prized very highly and carried proudly up to the time of his death. He came to Jackson several years ago and has enjoyed good health almost continuously. He was careful in his habits, being moderate in all things. Only a few years ago it was not unusual for him to walk from Gordonville to Jackson, a distance of five miles. He is survived by three sons, Gustav and Fritz of Cape Girardeau, and Louis of Salt Lake City, Utah. He lived to see many changes brought about and enjoyed contrasting the customs of long ago with those of the present. He was friendly and enjoyed the respect and esteem of all who knew him. The body was taken to a funeral home at Cape Girardeau where it will be kept for the time of burial, probably Sunday afternoon, the date not to be definitely fixed until advice is received from relatives. Comments: Christian Stein was also known as Heinrich Christian Stein. His first wife was Katharina MERTINS (MARTENS?). They were married in Germany, possibly in 1851, and she died in 1892. They arrived in New Orleans in 1854, not 1856. Christian Stein had two children not mentioned in the obituary who predeceased him: William Stein and Anna Caroline Alvina Stein, wife of George F. SIEMERS. Christian Stein’s father was also named Christian Stein, and he died in Cape Girardeau in 1867.
