that has been done to Summers Cemetery:
NOTE PLEASE READ: Summers Cemetery is not part of the
property that surrounds it. The deed
contains a square excepted in the middle and, therefore, the owners of the
surrounding property are not obligated to keep it up.
Folks come from far to see this Cemetery. Someone from England once made
the long trip to see this Cemetery and the Canterbury stones.
The Cemetery once had a fence around it. It is understood that at one time
some descendants requested to fix up the Cemetery. They began by cutting
down trees, which fell onto the stones, knocking most of them over. They
took the wood away and never returned. The fence was so damaged that cows
continued to get caught in it, forcing the owners of the surrounding
property to take down the remainder of the fence.
At the time of the photo shooting, only one stone is left standing. We took
photos of all the stones, but some of them are upside down and still others
are nearly buried.
