"Whiskey Jack" Eberhard was fined $40 for boot-legging whiskey at Braggadocia last week.

Mr Crawford of Avenue Landing died suddenly of heart disease at Caruthersville July 22.

Gov. Brown’s grave. On a bald hill just on the edge of the great swamp and only a short distance from the southern terminus of the Rock Levee is an old time cemetery. It is a small enclosure, surrounded by an iron fence and contains but a few graves, mainly of the Giboney family. In the northwest corner of this enclosure however there is a fine, large marble monument on which can be read the inscription: Lieut Gov Wilson Brown ­ born August 27, 1804. Served in the General Assembly in the years 1838 -39 as a Member from Scott County. Appointed State Auditor January 11 1849. Resigned August 28, 1852. Elected Lieut-Governor in August 1852. Died August 27,1855. Ex. Lieut Gov Brown has a number of relatives in Cape Girardeau County.

Military Hop
A very pleasant affair was the ball given at the Convent building last Friday night under the auspices of the military college boys: Shap, sam, Davie and Clay Hunter, Bob Mott, Murray Phillips,, Charley Barnes and Howard Riley.

Rev. Jacob Broadhacker and wife of Bertrand are visiting their daughter, Mrs. Anna Rone.

W. S. Smith died on Friday July 23 of Consumption. Deceased has been a resident of Pemiscot co for the past twenty years and had been afflicted with the dread disease for several years.

James C. Connerty, better known as Jimmie Connor, is dead. He died, as many predicted, from the effects of Liquor. He was born in Ireland about 65 years ago. He lived in New Jersey prior to and a few years after the late war. He was coachman for a rich man in Trenton and served through the ward with this man. He worked at odd jobs in the country digging ditches, working on the railroad,, etc., but would invariably come to town occasionally, and get on a spree. Richard Bros. took charge of the remains and the body was respectfully put away last Tuesday in the Denhart Graveyard.

Mr. And Mrs. John Delano, of Murphysboro, IL are visiting their relatives, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Boyce.

John Martin, who has been suffering from ill health for over a year, died on Tuesday, July 27, at the residence of his brother-in-law, Wm Handcock. Mrs. Mattie Hurley, wife of Richard Hurley died on July 23, of pneumonia, aged 21 years,10 months, and 8 days. She leaves 2 children. (Ruddles Point news)

Philo LeSieur of Scrub Ridge was in town Saturday.

Miss Hattie Lewis went to Caruthersville Friday to visit her sister, Mrs. A. C . LaForge.

Miss Lottie Smith after a pleasant visit to her cousin, Miss Zula Shields, and others has returned to her home in Sikeston.

Miss Lutie Bivoney of Cape Girardeau is visiting her uncle Amos L. Phillips, and other relatives here.

Will Burns, a negro at Commerce, Sunday with a shotgun, killed his wife and wounded Constable John Watson, who were coming for the woman’s clothes.

Saturday July 17 at the residence of Lum Bell at Gayoso, Henry Adams, of Portageville, and Miss Daisy Stewart of near New Madrid were married by Squire Jasper Sanders.

From the Campbell Independent we learn the Ferral LeSieur has been committed to jail at Kennett to await the action of the grand jury for arson. On Sunday night, July 18, at 12 o’clock, the Lasswell house at Campbell was discovered t ob e on fire. The flames were extinguished with but little damage to the building. Suspicion pointed to Ferral as the guilty one; he was arrested and admitted his guilt.
