An Historical Land Suit. The Heirs of Robert G. Watson recover title to one third of a League of Land in Texas

Robert Goah Watson was born in Scotland and came to the village of New Madrid in 1805 to assume charge of a business conducted by his uncle, Robert Goah of Detroit Mich and Gabriel Hunot, one of the old French residents of this county. Mr. Watson continued in business here for a number of years. And it was his custom to make annual visits to New Orleans from 1812 to the time of his death in 1855. He was writing his auto-biography at the time of his death.

The land was from a headright certificate at the Austin TX land office. In Brazoria Co., TX. There was a transfer of the headright certificate to P. W. Wynne, a notorious land forger, who transferred the certificate in Travis Co., TX in 1872 to W. G. Wilkins.

At the time of his death, Robert G. Watson’s direct heirs were: H. G. Watson, Robert Watson, Eliza Watkins, Amanda Hunter, Sidney LaValle, Melinda Fontaine and Emeline Dow, all of whom are now dead and left surviving them:

(Abstracted from long front page story) Dick Stewart, youngest child of the late James Stewart of Como Twp., forged the name of George Crafton to and order to Ewald Pinder for $2.25.

Mr. Lee Barnes returned home from Campbell.

Mr. Asa Ruddle of Ruddle’s Pont passed through our city a few days ago. He is one of the pioneers of Ruddle’s Point. He is a good hearted old man and we were gratified to meet him.

Mr. Jack Alley of New Madrid Co., passed here on Sunday June 27 with his fine race Mares.

Born on the 2d inst. To the wife of Mr. W. H. Garanflo, a daughter.

Dr. Dalton left Monday for Jackson where he was called by the serious sickness of his little daughter.

Mrs. Charles E. Hill of Malden came over on the noon train Monday and is the guest of Miss Mary Watson.

Mr. Wm. Riley, wife and daughter, and Mr. J. R. Brewer returned from Nashville last Thursday. Reunion of ex-Confederates.

Mr. John W. Brownell a native son of New Madrid, but who has been living in Howell Co thirteen years, is visiting here. He has a fine farm in Howell.

Little Annie Newbauer is still very sick, but hopes for her recovery are entertained.

Mrs. John A. Mott who has been confined to her bed for 2 weeks is improving slowly.

Mr. Jeff King, the well known and popular groceryman at Portageville and Miss Anie Shepard, daughter f Mr. M John Shepard were married at the church at Portageville last Monday evening, Rev. Father Furlong officiating.

Hayword Happenings:
Married on June 30th, Mr. Ralph Meatte (uncle Frank’s baby) to Miss Stella Jacobs. Reb. C. Downing officiating, also July 4th, Mr. Minner to Miss Brown, Esq. Boon officiating.

Pt . Pleasant items.
Mr. And Mrs. John Randolph’s infant child died on the night of the 4th with cholera infantum.
Born to Mr. And Mrs. R. S. Mott, a fine boy on the 30th inst.
