A R. Byrd and his two eldest sons, Hunter and Abram and Rudle, the son of Wm. Byrd., left for Colorado Saturday for their health.

Miss Ada Howell , 18 year old daughter of Mr. And Mrs. W. Z. Howell from near Dexter, was killed instantly, July 23, when their mules became frightened at a gun being fired and ran away. The family was returning from a fishing trip July 23.

Governor Lon V. Stephens last Friday offered as reward of #100 for the arrest and conviction of Herb Irvin, who killed James Curtis in Scott Co., early in July 1897.

David Sumpter, a 17 year old boy was run over and killed about 2:30 o’clock last Saturday evening in St. Louis by an incoming Iron mountain train at the Spring Ave. Crossing.

Mrs. Mary Warren, 53 years old and without a home, is an exemplification of the number of physical ills a person can endure without succumbing. She entered City Hospital at St. Louis Tuesday after a months absence.

Will Burns, a negro of Commerce, MO shot and killed his wife last Sunday morning. Constable John Watson, at the request of the woman went with her to her husband’s house to get her clothes. Burns, who was insanely jealous, stepped out with his shotgun and fired twice, the first load striking the constable, initiating a serious wound in the side and the next shot brought the woman to instant death.

William Hicks, aged 18 years, of Sturgeon, has been arrested, charged with seducing Miss Maud Wilson, under promise of marriage. Miss Wilson is the daughter of the pastor of the African Methodist Church in Sturgeon.

Daniel Kirwan, an Englishman, 61 years of age, died sunday morning about 4 o’clock from sunstroke received at 4:30 pm. (The thermometer registered 100 degrees in the shade at the City Drugstore. He had been in the employ of Mr. Druelinger at he Dreulinger Hotel, for over three years as gardener. He leaves a son, James, R. W. Kirwan of Brooklyn NY and a daughter Mrs. A. M. Thornton, Atlantic Terrace, Cremore County, Waterford, Ireland with whom he kept in correspondence. The body was taken in charge by Richard Brothers, undertakers and interred Sunday afternoon in the Denhart graveyard.

Examinations for the free scholarship in the State University were conducted at the courthouse this week. Sam Corbett, son of Attorney Corbett, was the successful applicant. His opponent Amos Long, son of W. t. Long , section foreman on the branch.

Matilda J. Brooks, plaintiff vs. Sidney Brooks, defendant. 24 July 1897,filed for divorce.

James Sawyers and Amelia McElmore were married at Portageville July 28th.

Miss Gertrude Watson, after a pleasant visit with her sister, Mrs. C. L. Mitchell returned to Malden Monday.

Mrs. Mary Jaspar has moved up from her farm and is living with her mother, Mrs. P. E. Waters.

Mrs. Frankie Leonard, nee Brownell, of Chicago, is visiting her sister,

Mrs. W. C. Newsum. Instead of John Martin being dead, as our reported had it last week, it was his brother Gereral, a few years younger.

A little daughter of George Coleman is seriously ill with typhoid malaria.

Meade Powell, son of Judge Powell is seriously sick with peritonitis. Rev. Wm. J. Vanpell and Mrs. Martha Jones were married July 21, J. E. Adams officiating (Stewart Items)

Born, on July 21, to Mrs. And Mrs. Charley Hatcher, a fine girl (Stewart Items)

Harry James, who has been visiting his grandparents at Morley, Mr. And Mrs. J. W. Mayes, returned to his home at Springfield, Sunday. (From Benton Record)
