A fatal accident. On Monday Dec 29th near Ferrenburg, Charles Taylor, aged about 21 years, brother of Mrs. Carles Jeffries, was thrown from his wagon and his left leg caught in one of the wheels, dislocating it at the ankle. Dr. Watson set the limb and encased it in plaster of Paris. Symptoms of lockjaw made their appearance and the limb was amputated, but no relief resulted and the young man died of lock jaw yesterday. Jan 5th.

Wright, Louis F., died at his home in Pemiscot county, near Stewart, of typhoid pneumonia at 3:30 pm Sat. Jan 1st 1898. Aged 25 years 9 months, and 27 days. The deceased was the only living son of the late H. F. Wright and was a brother of Mrs. WWS Waters and Miss Maggie Wright. He was a young man of irreproachable character honor and integrity. He was well liked by all who knew him and his friends are numbered by his acquaintances. The remains were brought up the residence of Mr. DC Lee on Sunday and after impressive ceremonies conducted by Rev. AT Osborne, monday morning they were taken to the family burying ground on the farm of Mr. Fount Lee and placed in their last resting place beside the graves of his mother and farther and his brother Luther.

Mrs. Ann Rochell of NM was called to Cottonwood Point to the bedside of her mother Mrs. Will Secoy who is seriously sick with Pneumonia. Dr. Hudgings is attending Mrs. Secoy. (Caruthersville press)

Born to M&M Charles A. Baldridge, on the 3d inst, a ten pound daughter. Born in Kennett Dec 29, at 8:20 am, to the wife of EP Caruthers, a daughter.

Miss Eva Shields was called to St. Louis last Sunday by the serious illness of her father who died Tuesday last.

A rumor was in circulation this week that Will Lewis had killed Vince Beard near Cottonwood Pt. Both were residents of this city. We cannot vouch for the truthfulness of the report.

Mr. Thompson Bird, an old and prominent citizen of Bird’s Point in Mississippi county, died Dec 18th . He was well known here, his first and last wife being members of the family of the late Charles F. Emory, and sisters to Mrs. Benton Akin and Mrs. Albert Lee.

Squire Joel Cook was about the proudest man we saw last Saturday.. His sons, Nathan, Henry, Myer, Adolph and Louie made him a birthday present of a fine roller-top oak desk, very convenient fo the ‘Squire’s office. He deals out justice now in style.

Mr. Luther Martin, a native of NM co died at his home in Corsicana, TX., Dec 27th, aged 67 tears, 4 months and 14 days, leaving a wife and six children to mourn his death. Mr. Martin was a brother of Mrs. Ed. LaVallee of this city, Tom J. Martin, formerly of New Madrid but now of Fayetteville, AR, and Mrs. Jeannette Charmichael of Texas. The deceased was surveyor of this county for a number of years and a man of great ability. He was a man with many good qualities and was well liked by all who knew him. His relatives have the sympathy of many friends. Wash. Crafton, 19 years of age, near Soiders mill in Cape Co., Dec 22, accidently discharged his gun while drawing it through a wire fence, the ball entering his neck, killing him. When his body was found his faithful dogs were lying beside it.

Miss Mary McGuire, living with her nephew, Tom McFarland, fell on the ice Wednesday morning and was seriously hurt. She is a very old lady, being in the neighborhood of 75 years of age. Thirty years ago next month, during just such a siege of sleet and ice as we have now she had a similar fall.
