Wm Bentley was discarded from the indictment for murder in the first degree last Tuesday, charged with the killing of Wm. McCleary July 5, 1896, McClearys body was discovered on the railroad track about a mile and a half east of Malden in this county. The head had been severed from the body by a train passing over it. The indictment was found at the September term 1897 and Bentley was arrested by Sheriff Willett at Malden about two weeks ago. ...
McCleary, his wife and stepdaughter lived in a small cabin owned by Bentley about 4 miles east of Malden. It is stated that the house was considered a bawdy one and a posse of men after removing the household goods one night burned it. For this offence IL Hopper was arrested and acquitted. ,,,,

Elam B. Mills, of Scott county and Laurence Fisher of this city will be examined before Judge Riley next Saturday to be admitted to the practice of Law.

The wife of R. P. Montgomery, one of the editors of the Poplar Bluff Herald has received a divorce from her husband in the Stoddard County Circuit Court. The defendant fought the case but the tell-tale letter was produced and that settled the case.
