Mrs. Chas Jones and two children, now residents of Fulton, Tenn, arrived in our city Sunday and are visiting relatives.

Elam B. Mills, for a number of ears deputy circuit clerk of this county, and who subsequently held the same position in Scott county was examined during court last saturday and was granted a license as an attorney at law. He passed a very creditable examination. He is a candidate for Prosecuting Attorney of Scott county and we wish him success.

Pepper, Charles R., died in Cape Girardeau at 8:45 am. Fri Mar 25th 1898 aged 27 years and 6 months. The deceased was a talented gifted moral young man. He was principal of the public schools in this city in 1895-6 and had many friends here. His sister, Miss Kate Pepper who is a teacher here, attended the funeral Sunday Mar 27.

Fortune, Mr. Will S., died at Rich Hill Aron Sunday Mar 20 1898 of apoplexy. The deceased was the husband of Mrs. Lulu Fortune, nee Russell, sister of Hon. DL Russell of this city and was a man of many good qualities. He leaves besides his widow, a daughter six years of age.

Born in St. Joseph Mo on Thursday Mar 24, to Mr. And Mrs. TB Allen a son. He as been named Thomas Joseph for his father and grandfather, Judge Joseph Hunter.

Frank Austin, a negro, was sentenced to three years in the penitentiary last Monday by a jury in circuit court for assault with intent to kill another negro Louis Renfro. He shot Renfro in the neck side and back with a shotgun loaded with small shot.

Will Freeman, a full citizen of Como, married and is happy now. Lawrence W. Fisher, Attorney at Law, New Madrid MO. That sounds well and we predict a bright future for Lawrence. He passed an examination last Saturday and was licenced by Judge Riley as an attorney at law. Hon. J. J. Russell was chairman of the committee who examined mr. Fisher and upon it’s conclusion, announced to the court the Mr Fisher had passed the best examination of any young man he had ever heard examined for a license.

Hayward happenings.
Died on Saturday Mar 19 after a short spell of malarial fever MR. B. L. Tanner. He leaves a wife and small children.

Stewart Items.
B. Stone and Mrs. Pernsey Kennedy of Scrub Ridge were over in our vicinity on the 14th inst on business.
