Closing Exercises of the Public Schools ­ Many Brilliant Essays Orations and Declarations. Killed by lightning. Friday afternoon about 3 o’clock, while engaged in plowing., James Carr was struck by a bolt and instantly killed. The unfortunate man was employed by Thomas Merritt who lives about two and one half miles north of Portageville. ... James Carr was aged about 23 years and was unmarried. ...

Edward Embry and Miss Flora Ward were married on the 22d inst. Also William Carter and Mrs. Smith were married at the same time. Rev. Vishop performed the ceremony at the church..

John E. Powell, Presiding judge of the county court died suddenly at his residence in this city at half past 6 o’clock. This morning Thur May 26. At the age of 65 years, 7 months and 12 days. ... About a year ago he had an attack of apoplexy.... This morning he was in his garden hoeing, when he suddenly became ill...

Judge Powell was born in the city and was the only child of Mr. J. B. Powell and Mrs. Clarissa Powell, nee Waggener, who after the death of her husband married Col. Richard J. Waters, father of the late Louis A and Wm. W. Waters. The deceased has bee n prominent in mercantile pursuits in this city during his life and at his death was in the drug business with John A Hummel. He has been presiding judge of the county court for the past twelve years. He leaves 4 children by his first marriage viz Louis W. Powell, Mrs. Ruth Hillman, Mrs. Lotta Paxton and Mrs. Lella Phillips and three grandchildren, children of his deceased daughter Mrs. Linda C. Phillips.
Judge Powell’s first wife who was Miss Virginia Fontaine, died in 1879, and he was married to Miss Mal H. Hargrave of Virginia in 1882, and to this marriage two children were born, Meade and Chester, who with their mother survive him. No arrangements have yet been made.
