Dock Adams Killed by Jas Sexton at Kennett.
Wednesday morn Feb 28 in the Oak Place saloon, south side of the square, Kennett at 7:30, J. W. Sexton, the proprietor, shot and probably mortally wounded J. H. Dock Adams, a well known young man in this county. Trouble arose over a game of seven-up. ... J. H. (Dock) Adams came here when a boy from New Madrid Co. and has lived on Horse Island until a few months ago when he sold his farm and moved to Kennett, buying a place of W. G Bragg in the west part of town. He was inclined to be a sport and at times used intoxicants to excess. He was married with three children his wife being a daughter of Mart Bolin. J. W. Sexton was born and raised here and never in serious trouble before. He lately bought the saloon in which the trouble occurred from R. M. Hart. He is married and has an interesting family. He is a brother of R. E. Sexton of Malden.... Adams died from the effects of the wound Thursday and sexton was arrested and placed in jail.
The deceased was a brother of Robert and Albert Adams of Portageville. These gentlemen went over to Kennett Friday morn returning Saturday. The body of Dick Adams was buried at Kennett.

There will be 7 census enumerators for this county 1 for the city of New Madrid, 1 for New Madrid Twp., 1 for St. John, 1 for LeSieur, 1 for Como and West, 1 for East and Big Prairie, and 1 for Portage and LaFont. The applications have been sent in to Hon. Ben T. Walker, Supervisor of the 12th District, Dexter, Mo.

Mrs. Nettie Barnes and R. W. Johnson of Sikeston arrived tuesday to visit their brother Preston Johnson, who was seriously sick with pneumonia, but is better.

The engagement of W. C. Jackson, of the firm G. W. Jackson & Co. of Cairo, and Mattie Sith of Caruthersville, is announced.

Rev. W. L. Duval, a Baptist minister and farmer, who lived near Portageville, died in St. Louis last week from the effects of an operation for the piles. His body was brought down home and buried. He was a member of the W. O. W. at Portageville, and carried a certificate for $2000, but two months ago allowed the assessment to lapse.
