Marshall John Gunn of Portageville last Thursday eve attempted to arrest Charles Jackson who was drunk and defying arrest. Jackson had a razor and tried to use it. Gunn pulled his little summer gun and took a couple of shots at Jackson but only winged him, one ball taking effect in his wrist and ranging up the arm to the elbow. This did not stop Jackson, so Gun reached down his trousers leg and pulled his winter cannon, but before he could raise to a level, Jackson took flight, but was afterwards arrested.

The Democrat- News of Fredericktown, Mo.,contains a long article on the laying of the corner stone of the New Madrid County court house. Among the articles placed in the box which was put in the corner stone was a tax receipt made out to A. Nifong for $5.75 in 1823, and signed by Micha Stone, also one dated 1837. Micha Stone was the great-grandfather of W. M. Stone, the well known grocer of Cape Girardeau (Cape Democrat). (Doubtless that was written new Madison county court house)
