History of Rohrer Cemetery

  • Subject: Rohrer Cemetery

The Rohrer Cemetery was established by Daniel & Lucinda Rohrer, on their farm. It was locatedon a knoll, that would not be underwater during flood season. Some said it had been one of the old Indian Mounds found in Pemiscott.
During flood season my Great-grandfather Daniel Rohrer, along with some of his neighbors would let their cattle stand there till the water receded. During an epidemic there were many deaths around Hayward and the town cemetery was full, so in need of a burial site they started burials here, with Mr. Rohrer's permission. It is here that Daniel & Lucinda's two daughters, Hettie B. 5/.8/1871 -- D. 9/5/1875, and Anna B. 5/30/1872 -- D. 9/12/1874 were laid to rest.
I had visited this cemetery with my cousin Son Rone of Portageville, as he was a local historian, in 1981, and at that time there were still several stones. It was told that the highway had planned to go thru the cemetery, but protest was strong enough that the highway was moved to prevent the disturbing of graves.
This is some of the history that I knew of the Rohrer Cemetery, as my family had lived there.
