Aug. 3 1915-Jan. 5, 2007 Commercial Appeal Memphis, TN Jan. 7, 2007 Nettie M. Handley Hopkins 91, of Memphis and formerly of Mesa, AZ and Caruthersville, MO, passed away peacefully January 5, 2007, in Memphis. She was the daughter of John F. and Flossie Anderson Miller. Nettie married Cloyd Handley, Sr. January 15, 1938. He preceded her in death in 1959. In 1972 she married Harvey J. Hopkins who passed away in 1992. Her only child Cloyd M. Handley, Jr. died in 2001. Nettie owned and operated Tri-County Gas of Hayti in the 1960’s. She served in the administration of the Pemiscot Memorial Hospital and the Caruthersville Chamber of Commerce. In the recent decades, she was partner in Dunavant Farms of Lake Village, AR. She was an active member of the Methodist Church, a lay minister, and volunteer advocate for the elderly and infirm. Her grandchildren, Anne Handley Cummings of Pawleys Island, South Carolina and Sam Handley of Houston, TX, survive to celebrate her life in a private graveside ceremony Monday, January 8 at 11 a.m. at Maple Cemetery in Caruthersville, MO. Arrangements are with H.S. Smith Funeral Home. Tributes in lieu of flowers may be sent to Eastwood Methodist Church in Caruthersville. NOTE: This was my cousin.Our fathers were brothers.
