In the sequalia of Oscar's accidental death as a deputy for Perry County, the family gathered together in bereavement. Naturally, photos were taken and in this photo are members of the Meckers, Hackers, Hornbergers, and others.
These folks were members of the Lutheran congregation at Immanuel or at Peace Lutheran, possibly others. They were farmers, brick layers, barrel makers, carpenters, clerks, meat cutters and a host of other careers but they were all remarkably devoted to their relatives and friends, especially those from their Christian faith. From this group there were buildings constructed all over Perryville and several of those buildings remain standing to this day. In taking this photo it is apparent that an attempt was made to mark the generations within the photo. All of these photos were part of the wake for Oscar. Each of these people had grandparents that were among the original 700 families brought over from German to found the Missouri Synod of the Lutheran Church. When we discuss roots, these people had no confusion as to where they came from or who they were.
