Hornberger Mecker Family (view #-2-)

View Photo only<

  • Perry County

The entire extended family came to the wake. Deputy Oscar Edwin Hornberger continues over the last 80+ years as the only Perry County deputy ever killed while on duty for the county. Thanks to Sheriff Gary Schaff, Oscar's sacrifice has finally been cited by the county and a small memorial stone in recognition has been placed in the Town Square at the courthouse in his honor. At his wake, held in the house on East Main Street, its easy to see the passing of Oscar was well-attended.

To this day, Oscar's wake and funeral seem to remain one of the largest attended funeral service ever held in Perryville, MO such was the love everyone had for Oscar. We do know that cited in the Perry County Republican, the funeral was the largest ever recorded at that time, 80+ years back. The loss was felt by everyone in the family from mother and family to distant cousins. You can see by this crowd that the gathering goes back to E. Main St and spills out onto the street. I believe Young and Son's were the attending mortuary service. As you can also see, the water for the house was via the well-head located near the back porch and visible in the photo. As far as I am aware, all the people in this photo are now deceased. In the front row of children we see Harry Hornberger, (d: 1952) Delilah Hornberger,(d:2000) and Eleanor Mecker, (d:2002). Aunt Eleanor was the last to go. All are sadly missed. Its a difficult thing to look at your relatives and realize they never had an unkind word about each other, they were always there, through thick and thin for each other following the Creeds they learned and lived out in the Christian faith they were fortunate enough to be born into. But, they are also gone and now its passed to us. The days of their lives weren't as easy as we find things here in the 21st C...but they struggled to bring to us our Daily Bread and the opportunities they never witnessed. Still, I can hear them wondering about our lives these days and many wandering paths of seeming indifference while many are falling from the faith. Would they be disappointed in your efforts or not?
