Bessie Ellen Mayfield
1910 - 1981

Morley -- Bessie Ellen Mayfield, 71, died at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Southeast Missouri Hospital at Cape Girardeau.     

Born Sept. 20, 1910 in Stokes, Ark., daughter of the late Fred and Celeste Harris Purdy, she had lived in the Morley area 55 years, moving here from Arkansas.  She was a member of the Morley Church of Christ and was a retired cook for Scott County R-5 School District.

Surviving are:  her husband, Lester Mayfield of the home; one son, Gene O. Mayfield of Morley; one daughter, Mrs.. Bob (Doris) Barnes of St. Charles;  two brothers, Carmen Purdy of Hayti and Jack Purdy of Anderson, Ind.;  one sister, Rowena Houseman of Centralia, Ill.;  and four grandchildren.     

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel at Sikeston. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Morley Church of Christ with George Huffstutter, minister, officiating.     

Burial will follow in New Morley Cemetery.
