Marvin Purdy -------- 1915 - 1974 A Sikeston man was killed in a two-car accident at 9:25 p.m. Thursday at the junction of Highway 61 and Route P one mile east of Kewanee. The death of Marvin Purdy, 59, of 903 Patricia Drive, Sikeston, raised this year's death toll on Southeast Missouri roads to 95, compared to 130 during the same period on 1973.
The highway patrol reported the accident occurred when an eastbound car driven by Purdy failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck in the side by Anna Marie Wheeler, 23, of Howardville. The Purdy car then skidded across the road into a ditch and struck a utility pole. Purdy was pronounced dead at the scene by New Madrid County Coroner Gene Clayton.
He was born March 26, 1915 in Maynard, Ark. to the late Mr. and Mrs. William F. Purdy. He was a bookkeeper for Morley Farm Supply and was a member of the Morley Church of Christ.
On Aug. 14, 1941, he married Ruby Mae Boone, who survives.
Other survivors include two sons; Charles Purdy of Wentzville and Ed Purdy of Sikeston; two daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Happe of Sikeston and Mrs. Gaile Bess of St. Charles; two brothers, Jack Purdy of Anderson, Ind. and Carmen Purdy of Bragg City; two sisters, Mrs. Bess Mayfield of Morley and Mrs. Rowena Houseman of Wayne City, Ill., and six grandchildren.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at Bill O'Guinn Funeral Home in Sikeston where services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday. George Huffstutter, minister of the Charleston Church of Christ will officiate.
Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Gardens near Morley.
