John L. Maurath (12/14/97)
Carl Friedrich Phillip "Fritz" HELD was born on October 1, 1829 in the small village of Besebruch, located in the German state of Westfalen, which at that time was part of Prussia (Preussen). Besebruch is located between the cities of Osnabrueck and Hannover, and is not far from the famed village of Hameln (Hamlin), where the story of the pied-piper originated. Fritz was the son of Heinrich HELD, and attempted to join the Prussian Army, but was rejected because of his small size. Angered, he supposedly left the area, heading toward Holland and working as a coal miner along the way. He emigrated to America and settled near Illmo, Scott County, Missouri. On April 12, 1862, he married Katharina Elisabeth EIFERT, whose family came from the village of Rebgeshain in the German state of Hessen-Darmstadt. They were married in Eisleben Lutheran Church in Illmo. Fritz died Sept. 7, 1918. We are seeking relatives and descendants of Fritz and Katharina for inclusion in a family history book which is being written. Please contact John L. Maurath, Brenda (Burger) LeGrand, or Fred J. Held, Rt.1, Box 1175, Scott City, MO. 63780. E-mail: conlaeth@juno.com

John L. Maurath (12/14/97)
Katharina Elisabeth EIFERT was born Nov.14, 1843 in the village of Rebgeshain, in the German state of Hessen-Darmstadt. She was the daughter of Johann Heinrich EIFERT and Anna Maria ROTH. Johann was the son of Johann Valentin EIFERT (from Darmstadt) and Anna Gertrud SCHNEIDER. The Eifert's and Roth's came to America and settled near Illmo, Scott County, Missouri in the 1850's. Katharina was married when she was 18 years old to Carl Friedrich Phillip "Fritz" HELD on April 12, 1862 in Eisleben Lutheran Church. He was 14 years her elder. Fritz came from the village of Besebruch in the German state of Westfalen, then part of Prussia (Preussen in German). Trying to locate all descendants of these families for inclusion in a family history book. Please contact John Louis Maurath, Brenda (Burger) LeGrand, or Fred J. Held, Rt.1, Box 1175, Scott City, MO. 63780 E-mail: conlaeth@juno.com

MC GAUGH/TRAINUM: I seek information about the MC GAUGH Family. Earliest area I know for them is in the mid 1800s, Malden in New Madrid County. Then a bit later in Illmo, now Scott City. Where family lore has it my Great Grandmother ran a boarding house for railway men. I do not know her name, or my Great Grandfathers. My grandmothers name was Nancy MCGAUGH, she had several brothers and sisters, but the only names I have are a sister Pearl who married Jim TRAINUM and a brother John (adopted, thought to be one of the orphan 'Train Children' immigrants out of New York. Nancy worked in the Boarding house as all the family did. Her job was to make the pies. She could whip out 8-10 pies in nothing flat, and they were heavenly. She married a railway man, a Saint Louisan named Patrick J. DEVINE. I sure would appreciate any information anyone might be able to share with me regarding Nancy's parents names, the boarding house or any Trainums or Mc Gaughs still in the area.
