On April 24th, members of the U.S. Grant
Camp joined members of Sterling Price Camp #145 of the Sons of Confederate
Veterans to clean Sappington Cemetery. Participants from the U.S.
Grant Camp were Steve Leicht, Mark Coplin, Bob Petrovic, Don Palmer and
Terry Cadenbach. This cemetery, located just east of Crestwood Plaza on
Watson Rd., was established in 1811, and is one of the oldest remaining
in the area. It contains the graves of several Revolutionary War veterans,
War of 1812 veterans and a veteran of the Mexican War. Both Union and Confederate
veterans of the Civil War also repose at Sappington Cemetery. All of the
stones were cleaned with power sprayers and stones that had collapsed were
set and epoxied in place. In addition, markers for both Union and Confederate
veterans were affixed in cement and spot-welded to prevent theft. An official
from the city of Crestwood observed the clean-up and photographed some
of the activities. The day produced excellent results that were a testament
to teamwork. [Below photos by Don Palmer.]
