Slave Compensation Cases


This information was found at the National Archives - Central Plains Regional Branch in Kansas City, MO. What follows are excerpts of slave compensation cases from Record Group (RG) 21, Records of the U.S. District Court - Kansas. Under the provisions of section 24, Acts of Congress of 24 February, 1864, and 28 July, 1866, slaveholders in States not in rebellion could be compensated by the U.S. Government for slaves who enlisted in the Union Army. The claims do not necessarily contain standardized information. Original cases contain a variety of documentation, including bills of sale, copies of wills, army surgeons records and many other valuable and interesting items.

I GEORGE ANDERSON, Administrator for the estate of S. B. SCOTT and a resident of Pettis County, MO, claim compensation for the slave ROBERT ANDERSON, who enlisted at Tipton, Cooper County, MO. Said slave was purchased from DEXARD'S estate in 1856, of Cooper County, MO at 18 years of age, 5'8" in height. 31 December, 1866.

I GEORGE W. BAKER, a loyal citizen and resident of Lafayette County, MO claim compensation for my slave LEWIS TURNER, who enlisted 1 January, 1864 at Carrollton, MO. Said slave was purchased in 1862 from LEWIS TRUNDLE. Witnesses: HENRY A. MITCHELL, WILLIAM SPRATT, ROBERT C. TEMPLE, RICHARD VAUGHN. 14 November 1866.

I GEORGE W. BAKER, a loyal citizen, and resident of Lafayette County, MO claim compensation for my slave GEORGE BELL who enlisted 1 January, 1864 at Carrollton, MO. Said slave was purchased from JOHNM N. CARTER of Lafayette County, MO in 1862. 14 November 1866.

I MARTHA A. BARKER, a loyal citizen, claim compensation for my slave HENRY LEWIS, who enlisted 29 Feb., 1864. Said slave was purchased from Mr. PATTERSON of St. Louis, MO in 1842 by ROBERT H. COUNTY. Witnesses: ZACHARIAH B. MOORMAN, WILLIAM CARY. 1 Dec., 1866.

I PINK D. BOOKER, a loyal citizen and resident of Miami, Saline County, MO, claim compensation for my slave STEPHAN BLAND, who was born a slave to me. Witnesses: GEORGE M. GARRET, WILLIAM ____. 10 Nov., 1866.

I WILLIAM C. DODGE, on behalf of BEMIS BROWN request compensation for the following slaves: SIMON aged 40, HORACE aged 34, STEPHEN aged 23, MORGAN aged 25, JESE aged 30, MARTAN aged 30, DICH aged 35, CHARLES aged 40.

I THOMAS P. BEMIS, a loyal citizen and resident of Franklin, Howard County, MO claim compensation for my slave PHILLIP BEMIS who enlisted on 26 Jan., 1864 at Tipton, MO. Said slave purchased as boy BRENT, aged 10, from THOMAS PASCHAL on 27 Feb., 1855.

I JOHN CAMPBELL, a loyal citizen claim compensation for my slave JIM, who I purchased as a boy aged 10 from WILLIAM EARLY on 16 Oct., 1850.

I WILLIAM CHANCELLOR, a loyal citizen and resident of Franklin, Howard County, MO, claim compensation for my slave HENRY CHANCELLOR, who enlisted 29 Nov., 1863 at Boonville, MO. Said slave was inherited by my wife JENNY CHANCELLOR from the estate of JONAS BLANKENBAKER her father in 1851. Witnesses: FRANKLIN BLANKENBAKER, JAMES DOWMER. 10 Nov., 1866.

I MOSES CHAPMAN, administrator of the estate of JACKSON PATRICK late of Lexington, Lafayette County, MO, claim compensation for the slave JOSEPH CLARK who enlisted 28 Sept., 1862 at Sedalia, Pettis County, MO. Said slave was purchased from CHRISTOPHER MULKEY in 1857. Witnesses: JOHN COVINGTON, RALPH BARBER, HENRY DAVIS. 21 Nov., 1866.

I MOSES CHAPMAN, administrator of the estate of R. N. CREEL, late of Lafayette County, MO, petition for compensation for the slave SAMUEL A. CREEL who enlisted 21 Feb., 1864 at Lexington, MO. Said slave was obtained by birth, the son of ELIZA, a slave woman owned by him. Witnesses: JOSEPH CHRISMAN, CHARLES CHRISMAN, WILLIAM GREEN, JAMES TAYS. 18 Jan., 1867.

I HECTOR A. CHINN, a loyal citizen and resident of Lafayette County, MO, claim compensation for my slave RUBEN HENIFORD who enlisted at Glasgow, MO on 26 Jan., 1864. Said slave was purchased from WILLIAM McCANSLAND of Lafayette County, MO on 15 Apr., 1862. Witnesses: J. W. OLIVER, GRANVILLE PAGE. 5 Dec., 1866.

I BENNETT C. CLARK, a loyal citizen and resident of Palestine, Cooper County, MO, claim compensation for my slave EDWARD GOTEWELL. Said slave was purchased as NED, aged ca. 18 years from THOMAS RUSSEL on 4 Sept., 1848. Witnesses: HARRISON SUTTON, NIMROD JONES. 21 Nov., 1866.

I SAMUEL COLE, a loyal citizen of Palestine, Cooper County, MO, claim compensation for my slave HARRISON BATES. Said slave was born to claimant in 1843. Witnesses: SAMUEL BRISCOE, JAMES HUTCHISON. 21 Nov., 1866.

I SARAH S. CORDER, administrix for the estate of JOHN CORDER late of Lafayette County, MO claim compensation for the following slaves: DANIEL PRICE, alias DANIES CORDER. Said slave was purchased in 1856 from NATHANIEL PRICE of Lafayette County, MO by my late husband. STROTHER WARD: inherited by my late husband from his father in Rappahanock County, VA in 1848. HENRY JOHNSON: purchased of JAMES GOODWIN of Lafayette County, MO in 1855. JACK RECTOR: purchased by my late husband from MRS. MUINDY in Rappahanock County, VA in 1840. Witnesses: JOHN G. I IRA C. DARBY, a loyal citizen and resident of Franklin, Howard County, MO claim compensation for my slave HENRY FRANKLIN who enlisted 26 Jan., 1864 at Tipton, MO. Witnesses: JOHN COSGROVE, JEFFERSON RAY, PATON BLIGH. 17 Nov., 1866.

I JOHN M. DAVIS, a loyal citizen and resident of Brunswick, Chariton County, MO, claim compensation for my slave FOREST MAUPIN, alias FORRESTER MAUPIN, a light copper skinned negro aged 21 years. Said slave enlisted 22 Dec., 1863 at Brunswick, MO in the 65th Regiment, Co "K" of the Colored Troops. Said slave was purchased on 8 Aug., 1850 from JOHN M. DUNCAN and wife JANE E. DUNCAN of Chariton County, MO. Witnesses: WILLIAM CASE, THOMAS BLACK, ROBERT A. SCOTT, L. BOWERSMITH. 1 Jan., 1867.

I ROBERT E. DAVIS, a loyal citizen and resident of Marion County, MO claim compensation for my slave ANTHONY DORSEY, alias ANTHONY DAVIS, who enlisted in Popes Division, Minnesota Regiment, U.S. Colored Troops. Said slave was purchased of CHARLES M. DAVIS of Marion County, MO in 1859. Witnesses: BENJAMIN FIELDS, BRAXTON GILBERT. 1 Dec., 1866.

I JOHN T. DOXEY, a loyal citizen and resident of Chariton County, MO, claim compensation for my slave SAMUEL DOXEY who enlisted 19 Jan., 1864 at Marshall, MO. Said slave was inherited from my father who died in 1849. Witnesses: JOHN WHITESIDE, WILLIAM SHEPPARD. 7 Dec., 1866.

I WALTER C. DRAKE, a loyal citizen and resident of Audrain County, MO, claim compensation for the following slaves: ANDERSON JONES, who enlisted on 10 Oct., 1864. Said slave was born my property. SIDNEY DRAKE, who enlisted 10 Oct., 1864. Said slave was inherited from my mother's estate in Jessamine County, KY. Witnesses: M. F. SIMMONS, S. A. CRADDOCK, ANDERSON JONES, HANEY DRAKE (colored). 22 Dec., 1866.

I JAMES R. ESHILL, a loyal citizen and resident of Franklin, Howard County, MO, claim compensation for my slave ALLEN ESHILL who enlisted 26 Jan., 1864 at Tipton, MO. Said slave was purchased from B. A. SAVAGE of Fayette, Howard County, MO in 1856. Witnesses: W. H. BOWMAN, SAMUAL HUGHES, both of Franklin. 9 Nov., 1866.

I GEORGE C. FLETCHER, a loyal citizen, and resident of Lexington, MO, claim compensation for my slave FRANK FLETCHER, alias FRANK CONNOR who enlisted 29 Jan., 1864. Said slave is son of RACHEL, who was owned by me. Witnesses: WILLIAM FLETCHER, THOMAS CATRON, GEORGE ENNIS. 14 Dec., 1866.

I WILLIAM L. FRENCH, a loyal citizen and resident of Audrain County, MO, claim compensation for my slave WILLIAM PEMBERTON, who enlisted 31 Oct., 1864. Said slave was given to me in 1852 by my father, PINKNEY FRENCH, who died Sept., 1860. Witnesses: I. EDMOND TOWNLY (colored), JERRY TOWNLY (colored), JOHN RAMANS, JOSEPH L. CRAIG. 17 Nov., 1866.

I JOSEPH M. GENTRY, a loyal citizen and resident of Ralls County, MO, claim compensation for my slave RICHARD GENTRY, alias RICHARD PECK. 3 Nov., 1866.

I FRENCH GLASCOCK, a loyal citizen and resident of Ralls County, MO, claim compensation for my slave BEVERLY BELTS. 31 Jan., 1867.

I JAMES GLASCOCK, a loyal citizen and resident of Ralls County, MO, claim compensation for my slave DABNEY JONES. Also for my slave SMITH SHELTON, born to a negro woman, slave of my wife. Also for my slave PAUL SHELTON. Also for my slave WILLIS WASHINGTON, who enlisted at Hannibal, MO. Said slave was born to slaves owned by NOAH GLASCOCK who died May, 1836. Also for my slave JAMES MADISON who was purchased from ROSABELLA McMILLIN ca. 1856 in Ralls County, MO. Also for my slave MARSHAL THOMAS aged ca. 16 years, born to a negro woman owned by me, who enlisted in Company "I", 3rd Arkansas volunteers. Witnesses: HIRAM GLASCOCK, JAMES W. DODD, FRENCH GLASCOCK, ARMSTRONG McADAMS. 1 Feb., 1867.

I WILLIAM C. HALL, a loyal citizen and resident of Lafayette County, MO claim compensation for my slave STEPHEN SMITH, alias STEPHEN HALL. Said slave was purchased from ELIRA C. BRYCE in 1843 in Shale,LA. Parish of Rapides. Bill of sale dated 18 Nov., 1843 states slave ca. 30 years of age. Witnesses: ANDREW F. HUTTON, JESSE DEAN, RICHARD CARR, SOLOMAN NORRIS, 13 Nov., 1866.

I JAMES P. HAMILTON, a loyal citizen and resident of St. Joseph, Buchanan County, MO, claim compensation for my slave JOSEPH HAMILTON who enlisted in the Colorado Cavalry. Said slave was purchased from JAMES W. DAVIS of Hart County, KY in 1849. Witnesses: JOSEPH ELLIOT. 8 Nov., 1866.

I JOHN HERDON, a loyal citizen and resident of Franklin, Howard County, MO claim compensation for the following slaves: REUBEN HERNDON, who enlisted 29 Nov., 1863 at Booneville, MO. Said slave was born my slave. Also, HARRISON SMALL, who enlisted 29 Nov., 1863 at Booneville, MO. Said slave was born my slave, is approximately 18 years of age, brown eyes, brown hair, yellow complexion, 5' 3 1/2", occupation farmer. Witnesses: G. E. STRANGE, A. SANDRUM. 19 Nov., 1866.

I SAMUEL T. HUGHES, a loyal citizen and resident of Franklin, Howard County, MO, claim compensation for the following slaves: JOSEPH GRISBY, who enlisted 26 Jan., 1864 at Tipton, MO. Said slave was born to me. GEORGE GRISBY, who enlisted 26 Jan., 1864 at Tipton, MO. HIRAM GRISBY, who enlisted 26 Jan., 1864 at Tipton, MO. Witnesses: W. H. BOWMAN, LEMUEL L. I PEYTON HUNT, a loyal citizen and resident of Fayette, Howard County, MO claim compensation for my slave ANDERSON HUNT who enlisted 9 Mar. at Tipton, MO. Said slave was purchased from JOHN HENRY in Fayette, MO. In ca. 1851. Witnesses: HENRY ____, THMAS TINDALL, HENRY EVANS.

I W. H. H. ISAACS, a loyal citizen and resident of Marshall, Saline County, MO, claim compensation for my slave TOM JOHNSON who enlisted 25 Jan., 1864 at Marshal, MO. Witnesses: JOHN BRYANT, C. E. PATTERSON, D. M. SANDRIDGE, F. M. SAPPINGTON. 16 Nov., 1866.

I HARRIET C. JAY, a loyal citizen and resident of Lafayette County, MO claim compensation for my slave LEWIS HILL, alias LEWIS JAY. Said slave was the son of DORCUS, a slave owned by me. Witnesses: W. B. WINSOR, J. B. TERRY, BENJAMIN CHINN, JAMES CHINN. 3 Dec., 1866.

I HORACE KINGSBURY, a loyal citizen and resident of Howard County, MO, claim compensation for my slave ALBERT CAVANAUGH who enlisted 11 Jan., 1864 at Tipton, MO. Said slave was ca. aged 30 years, brown eyes, black hair, dark complexion, 5'6", born Cooper County, MO, occupation farmer. He was purchased in 1851 from WILLIAM H. GRIGGS, agent of GEORGE WAIT. Witnesses: JAMES TOWDAN, JOHN W. LEE, JAMES D. GARDNER. 8 Nov., 1866.

I COLUMBUS F. KIRTLEY, a loyal citizen and resident of New London, Ralls County, MO, claim compensation for two slaves (unnamed).

I BENJAMIN LAWLESS, a loyal citizen and resident of Longwood, Pettis County, MO, claim compensation for the following slaves: GEORGE, who enlisted in 1863 at Sedalia. Said slave was purchased from DAVID JONES. LEWIS, who enlisted at Sedalia in 1863. Witnesses: GEORGE BAKER, E. F. SCOTT. 18 Dec., 1866.

I TERESA LAWRENCE, a loyal citizen and resident of Lincoln County, MO, claim compensation for my slave WILLIAM H. LAWRENCE who enlisted 7 Dec., 1863, at Troy, MO. 18 Dec., 1866.

We WILLIAM McHATTON and WILLIAM S. DRUMMOND, administrators for the estate of MALINDA D. GRAVES, late of Lafayette County, MO, claim compensation for the slave, HENRY JOHNSON who enlisted 7 Mar., 1864 at Carrollton, MO. Said slave was born to LUCINDA a slave of the late ZACHARIAH GRAVES husband of MALINDA D. GRAVES. Witnesses: URBAN E. CAMPBELL. 19 Dec., 1866.

I WILLIAM P. MOORE, a loyal citizen and resident of Lafayette County, MO, claim compensation for my slave SIMON GRAY. Said slave was a gift from my father-in-law, JAMES W. WADDELL, late of Lafayette County, MO, in 1855. Witnesses: W. B. WADDELL, J. W. WADDELL. 21 Nov., 1866.

I MILTON NANCE, a loyal citizen and resident of Franklin, Howard County, MO, claim compensation for my slave BENJAMIN who enlisted 12 Jan., 186? at Tipton, MO. Said slave was purchased from B. E. NANCE of Charleston, VA on 14 Nov., 1854 at the age of 14 years. Witnesses: DR. W. D. JACKSON, JOHN AGNEW. 3 Nov., 1866.

I WILLIAM NEALE, a loyal citizen and resident of Lafayette County, MO claim compensation for the following slaves: VOLNEY, who was inherited from my father GEORGE NEALE who died in Wood County, VA, and the slave, GEORGE PATON, who is mine by virtue of birth to my slave SALLY. I JOHN PEACOCK, a loyal citizen and resident of Lafayette County, MO, request compensation for the following slaves: ARCHER JOHNSON, who enlisted 30 Aug., 1864. Said slave is of dark copper complexion and was purchased from STEPHEN JOHNSON on 9 Oct., 1854 at ca. age 20-22. Also for slave EDMOND, alias ANTENY MASON. I LUCRETIA PEYTON, a loyal citizen and resident of Cole Bank, Cooper County, MO, request compensation for my slave JOHN FRANKLIN, who enlisted in 1863 at Little Rock, AR. Said slave was born to my slave HANAH in 1832 in Stafford County, VA. Witnesses: WILLIAM A. PORTER of Pettis County, MO. 21 Dec., 1866.

I JAMES D. PRICE, a loyal citizen and resident of Brunswick, Chariton County, MO, request compensation for my slave MILLER. Said slave was inherited from my wife's uncle, the will is recorded in Prince Edward County, VA. Witnesses: PITMAN PRICE, LEWIS PROSSER, PITTMAN S. PRICE. 18 Dec., 1866.

I JAMES QUAILES, a loyal citizen and resident of Booneville, Cooper County, MO, claim compensation for the following slaves: MICKEY ANDERSON who enlisted 1 Mar., 1864. Said slave was born my slave ca. 1842. Also, BENJAMIN TYLER, who enlisted 9 Mar., 1864 at Tipton, MO. Said slave was born a slave in ca. 1846. Witnesses: WILLIAM N. RAGLAND, E. B. McPHERSON, JAMES M. I JOHN RAMSY, a loyal citizen and resident of Livingston County, MO, claim compensation for my slave THOMAS JASPER. Said slave enlisted in 1863 at St. Joseph, MO. 2 Jan., 1867.

I CATHARINE RICHMOND, a loyal citizen and resident of Hannibal, MARION COUNTY, MO, claim compensation for my slave BASIL HAYDEN who enlisted in the 54th or 56th MASSACHUSETTS, U.S. Colored Troops. Said slave was born to my family. Witnesses: WILLIAM PINE, GEORGE HUBBARD. 26 Nov., 1866.

I MONTGOMERY SLEMONS, a loyal citizen and resident of New Plattsburg, Clinton County, MO, claim compensation for the following slaves: GEORGE SLEMONS, who enlisted in Feb., 1864. Said slave was born to me in Jefferson County, VA in about 1847. Also slave NAT SLEMONS, who was purchased from JOHN RANDOLPH TUCKER in Jefferson County, VA in 1843 or 1844. I STEPHEN D. SHORE, a loyal citizen claim compensation for my slaves JEFFERSON SHORE, and JAMES SHORE, who enlisted in Company "D" of the 67th Regiment. 21 Feb., 1867.

I JOHN STEPHENS, administrator for the estate of JOHN MURPHY, late of Palestine, Cooper County, MO, claim compensation for the slave JOHN MURPHY, who enlisted 21 Jan., 1864 at Syracuse, MO. Witnesses: LAWRENCE STEPHENS, HENRY WITHERS. 13 Nov., 1866.

I SAMUEL S. SWOPE, a loyal citizen and resident of Franklin, Howard County, MO, claim compensation for my slave REUBEN SWOPE, who enlisted in 1864 at Tipton, MO. Said slave was inherited from GILES EDWARS, in VA. Witnesses: STEPHEN CALLAWAY, WILLIAM G. EDWARDS. 17 Dec., 1877*. *(I think this should be 1867).

I SANDERS TOWNSEND, a loyal citizen and resident of Cooper County, MO, claim compensation for my slave STEPHEN. Said slave was born to my slave PHILLIS. Witnesses: S. N. McMAHNN, RICHARD MARSHAL of Saline County, MO (post office Longwood, Pettis County).

I ELIZABETH TURNER, a loyal citizen and resident of Franklin, Howard County, MO, claim compensation for my slave NELSON TURNER. Said slave was born to me in 1842. Witnesses: DANIEL TURNER, ALBERT BURROUGHS. 17 Nov., 1866.

I R. F. WAYLAND, executer of the estate of LOUISE SCOTT, late of Franklin County, MO, claim compensation for the slave GEORGE STROTHER, who enlisted 29 Nov., 1863 at Booneville, MO. Said slave was owned by WILLIAM SCOTT, and at his death in 1855, was willed to his wife LOUISE who died in 1865. Witnesses: N. ELLIOTT, JAMES BURRUS. 10 Nov., 1866.

I OSCAR R. WHITE, a loyal citizen and resident of Franklin, Howard County, MO, claim compensation for my slaves ALBERT WHITE who enlisted 26 Jan., 1864 and JOHN WHITE who enlisted 14 Feb., 1864, both at Tipton, MO. Witnesses: JOHN COSGROVE, GEORGE TOLBERT, LAURA TOLBERT. 10 Oct., 1866.
