According to Draper MSS - about 1822 Braxton and Jesse Van Bibber were out
hunting and trapping near Santa Fe, NM. They had joined with some Spaniards in
fighting a party of marauding Commanche Indians. AS Cooper and Van Bibber
followed after the retreating Indians they were ambushed and both killed by
some of the Indians that had hidden under the river bank.
