Mary Emma had fraile health and was provided with excellent educational
opportunities by her parents. According to her mother, she died of a broken
heart. Her husband, N. K. Smith, remarried, and the new stepmother didnot care
for Mary Emma's children. Robert died and Willie Moore was raised by his
grandmother, Hannah B. McFarland. Concern was felt over the homelife of these
children after the passing of their mother.
