Joshua BOTTS, born 11 Dec 1811, was the oldest son of Thomas and Martha Wilson BOTTS. Joshua and John, Seth and Thomas ((who married Martha Wilson)) were the sons of Joshua BOTTS (who fought in the Revolutionary War). Again in Thomas’ family we find his two oldest sons named Joshua and Seth, followed by Thomas H. and John. About the only way to keep these families straight is to keep their dates of birth and death in mind. The names Joshua, John, Seth, and Thomas are repeated over and over again in each family and generation.
Joshua was born in Clairborne County, TN. The family moved to Howard County, MO, about 1816, making young Joshua about five years old. 4 Apr 1844, Joshua and Elizabeth Jane Harvey were married. Elizabeth Jane was born 26 Feb 1830, and died 24 Mar 1924. She was 14 and Joshua 33 when they were married.
In 1838 Joshua and his brother John (Judge) were among the volunteers to the Mormon War. The Mormons, raided this section, stealing fodder by cutting the corn and packing it on their horses, and digging potatoes and carrying them away. Sometimes they traded trinkets for it, but generally took what they could lay their hands on and left. Very little wheat was raised at first, corn being the chief product, with potatoes and garden vegetables. Cattle ran the range over for miles, and the bell they wore, and the different sound of each, told each settler on the hunt for his stock whose cattle were in the sound of his ears. They not only knew their own bell but that of every neighbor for miles around.
It is believed that the best wheat crop ever raised in Linn County was on the farm of Joshua BOTTS in Parson Creek Township, one of the old pioneer stock. If not the best, it will do to tell. On 39 acres of ground, Mr. BOTTS threshed and cleaned 982 bushels of wheat.
Joshua and Elizabeth’s eleven children were: Elijah H. (1846-1864); Andrew J. (1849-1929); Martha B. Tharp (1851-1930); Jane B. Preston (1835-1921); John W. (1855-?); Wm. Leonard (1857-1938); J.R.S. (Doc) (1859-1917); Dora (1863-1930); O.K. (1866-1938); Seldon Joshua (1869-1926); and Theodosia.
16 Mar 1870, Martha Idress BOTTS, daughter of Joshua and Elizabeth Jane was married to Dr. Tharp. They were the parents of Lloyd and Willie Tharp.
Joshua died at an advanced age, 16 Dec 1878, and was sincerely mourned by a large circle of friends, having lived over forty years in the county.

The grandfather ((Joshua Botts)) was brought to this part of the state as a child and passed the remainder of his life here. He ((Joshua Botts)) followed in his father’s course and cleared a farm on which he lived until his death. He married Elizabeth Harvey, who is still living and has her home in Meadville. They were the parents of four sons and four daughters.
