In April 1870 Old Tishomingo County was split into
three counties Alcorn, Prentiss and Tishomingo.
Alcorn County received several townships from Old
Tippah County. Alcorn County Mississippi was
named after James Lusk Alcorn who was elected
Governor of Mississippi and took
office in March of 1870.
