(Letter written in behalf of David Kittrell in an effort to get him out of the service of the Confederate Army to come home and work as a shoemaker and blacksmith)

Near State Line, Ms Nov 16, 1863

Dear Sir:

I address this letter to you at the request of several of my respectable neighbors.

David Kittrell a member of Co F Maj. A C Steeds Batallion Cavalry (was at Meridian) is a blacksmith and shoemaker and it is very desirable to the indigent families of soldiers that he should be exempted from military duty and return home that in as much as he has given a promise to make shoes for the indigent families of (absent) families and the widows of deceased soldiers free of charge for his labor and to repair their empliments of husbandry also free of charge. His respectable connections and friends guarantee the fulfillment of his promise should he be exempted.

There have been, I think, many changes in the exemption laws and I have not in my power to make myself sufficiently acquainted with them not having the laws within my reach at present, but I am under the impression that both blacksmiths and shoemakers who work at their trades in a business are exempted by law and if I was right then David Kittrell is intitled to this discharge.

This section of the country is pineywoods with the exception of some rich lands on the Chickasawhay River and is sparsely settled generally with poor families and most have their men capable of bearing arms have been called to the Armies, many of them leaving their families in destitute circumstances--- ,this is my opinion, should have great weight with the proper authority in deciding promptly on Kittrell's discharge.

I flatter myself you will do in the justice to believe my assertion when I say I would not make my effort to obtain this discharge of a single efficient soldier in the present state of our affairs but for the Confederate belief that he would render more service to our cause at home by contributing to the comforts and support of widows and indigent families of soldiers than he could render in the field.

I understand that my worthy neighbor Mr Alex Avery is about himself to Meridian in petition by the heads & representatives of the families residing in the vicinity of David Kittrell's residence asking his exemption. Mr Avery, is further proof is required of Kittrells being in blacksmith and shoemaker who has been in the habit of working at both trades for neighbors, can give it.

I beg this favor of you to give this case your consideration an every decision in the pronision as you may deem proper.

I am with great support from about that
