  • East Mississippi State Hospital celebrates 125 years

The year 2007 marks the 125th anniversary of East Mississippi State Hospital.

A commemorative program has been set for Oct. 23 on the hospital grounds with proclamations from the governorís office and from the city of Meridian. Officials from the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, legislators, city and county officials, and several long tenured hospital employees and retirees will be special guests for the occasion.

Activities are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in front of the Administration Building with museum tours to follow. All former employees and other persons interested in East Mississippi State Hospital are encouraged to attend the quasquicentennial celebration.

East Mississippi State Hospital (EMSH) has a rich history that will be shared with the community through a hospital museum to open to the public following the quasquicentennial progr am. Located in one of the older buildings on campus, the museum houses photographs, artifacts and memorabilia depicting the hospitalís evolution from East Mississippi Insane Asylum to the hospital it is today.

East Mississippi Insane Asylum was established March 8, 1882, by the Mississippi Legislature with enabling legislation to establish a facility with a bed capacity for 250 patients. The citizens of Meridian donated 560 acres of land to encourage the Building Commission to locate the facility in Meridian.

The proposal was accepted and an appropriation of $50,000 was made for construction. EMSH has been located on the same site since that time. The first patient admitted was a 19-year-old man from Meridian. The name of the facility was changed to East Mississippi State Hospital in the early 1930s.

Since its beginning, EMSH has experienced many changes to improve the quality of life of individuals served at the facility.

With a current staff of 1,1 50, the hospital has become a quality treatment facility serving 31 of the stateís 82 counties. EMSH offers treatment programs for adult and adolescent psychiatric care, adult male and adolescent chemical dependency, intermediate psychiatric care, continuing psychiatric care, nursing home care and community residential and outreach services. The hospital is currently licensed for 415 psychiatric beds, 35 chemical dependency beds, 240 nursing home beds, and provides services for more than 200 individuals through group homes and other programs in the community services division.
