
John Wesley Newell

Born: December 13, 1901 Died: February 4, 1955 Lengthy Illness Ends in Death John Wesley (J.W.) Newell, 54, well known and widely liked member of one of Lauderdale County pioneer families, died Friday at 1:30 am in Meridian following an illness of several weeks. He was the son of Eros T. Newell and the late Mrs. Mattie Hobgood Newell of Marion and he was a life long resident of that community where he engaged in farming. Mr. Newell was a Mason, Shriner, and a member of the Marion Baptist Church. He is survived by a son, David Newell of Meridian; a sister, Mrs. Taylor Phillips of Marion; three grandchildren, David Newell Jr., Bobby, and Diane Newell of Meridian. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 pm from Webbs. The Rev. Pat Davis, Pastor of Marion Baptist Church officiating, assisted by Rev. Paul W. Harris, Pastor of Marion Methodist Church. Interment will follow the services in Magnolia Cemetery. Pallbearers: Barney Gunn, J.P. Tinnin, Fred Tinnin, Albert Bishop, Giles W. Patty Sr., R.W. Sturges Sr., H.L. Davis, P.E. Engell.
