My mother's maternal and paternal families were from northeaster MS and reported to have lived in Tishomingo, Yalobusha, Calhoun counties. I'm looking for information or family. Here's what I have: PATERNAL: Great grandfather: in 1880 U.S. Census records Calhoun Co. MS, John (Jessup?)BEARD (age 45) married to Malinda (NIX) (age 35). Three children at this time: Belle (10); Sophie (6) and William (3)--my grandfather (see below). John's parents were shown as being from MS; Malinda's from Alabama. According to family members, Malinda was not called by her first name but by her middle name, Martha. Grandfather: William (B.?) BOWEN (born around 1877) married Ida BOWEN (have also seen her name spelled Iddar in family records). They had 5 children: Olney Columbus (born in MS in 1897); Lula (born 1/26/1900 in MS); Les (Leslie Olme?) (born 3/20/1903). The fa mily left for Indian Territory where two more children were born: Viola (11/14/1907)--my mother; and Lilley Mae (died as an infant with my grandmother, Ida, in influenza epidemic. MATERNAL: Dunwood (or D.W.) BOWEN, reported by family to have been born in Calhoun County, MS.(not substantiated in any records to date); married to Sarah Jane GORDEN,also reported by family members to have been born in Calhoun CO (also unsubstantiated). They had 8 children, all born in MS: Thomas, Ida (my grandmother), Lon, Sed, Eddia (pronounced Addie), Ben, John, and Vinnie. The Bowen family moved to Indian Territory in 1889. It is believed that Dunwood had one brother who remained in MS and died there--Cheste r BOWEN. |

Have just found my grgrandfather, David Jackson SMITH, as a 6yr old listed, with his mother, Mary WARDLOW SMITH, in the household of John A SHARP, in the Tishomingo Co. (PO - Corinth), MS, 1860 US Census. This appears to bear out the family story that his fa ther died when David was a boy. I only found his mother's name last Sept. and have absolutely no idea what his father's name was, or when they married. With a last name of "SMITH", I have been unable to dig up any possibilities. The family may have floated back & forth over the border into Hardin Co., TN, as well. Looking for anyone who can help point me in the right decision for further search effort. |
