We are looking for the parents and any siblings of James Harold ALLEN, my husband's great-grandfather. According to what we have discovered so far, James Harold ALLEN, born June 10, 1842, was in Gatesville, Coryell, TX, in 1873. He is mentioned in a history about Coryell County as being a floor manager (and what was that?) for a dance on January 8 of that year. His first wife, Jeffersonia Crittenden Allen, died that year. They had a son, Jesse, who was 9 at the time of the 1880 census. December 24, 1874, James married Martha Jane "Mattie" Hammack, also of Gatesville. They had one child, a daughter -- Juanita ALLEN -- my husband's grandmother. Ocelala Juanita Allen was born February 6, 1880, and her father died in September of that same year. He is buried in the Oddfellows Cemetery in Gatesville. According to the 1880 census, he was a saloon keeper, and both his parents were born in TN. He was a member of the IOOF, Gatesville Lodge #111, and we think he had fought as a sergeant in Co. E, 1st MS Cavalry (Pinson's Cavalry). He listed both Tishomingo Co., MS, and Pontotoc Co., MS, as residences on his military papers. When James Harold Allen died, Mattie remarried to William Holmes LOVEJOY. |
