Date: 26 Aug 2000

MITCHELL Families of Tishomingo Co around 1860: Seeking descendants of John & Rebecca MITCHELL and John S. and Catherine O. MITCHELL of Bay Springs, Tishomingo Co, MS (1860 Census). Families were "next door" neighbors, and I suspect that they were related. Also living with them at this time were GRIFFIN family members. According to census data, John & Rebecca MITCHELL may have been from SC & SC?/TN?. Evidence suggests they migrated from Taylor's Ridge Valley, Walker Co, GA between 1850 and 1860. From their children's birthplaces, they clearly lived in TN before GA and MS. Their children may have included (but not limited to) Deborah, Margaret J., Georgia/George W., William, Amanda, Ann E., & Teny. John S. MITCHELL & his wife Catherine O. Deadman/Dedman were born in TN & GA?/NC?. John S. was born in 1834 (TN), but I have not yet found a census record for him in 1850. Catherine was the daughter of John L. DEADMAN and Nancy A. SINGLETARY, who lived in Woodstation, Walker Co, GA at the time that John S. MITCHELL and Catherine DEADMAN married in the later part of the 1850's. I have data to share and need your help to prove or disprove a connection between these families. Many thanks, Sue James Lloyd The Woodlands, TX Descendant of John S. MITCHELL & Catherine DEADMAN

Date: 30 Jul 2000

I am searching to find any info on John William, better known as (Will) Phifer, b. abt.1875, Iuka, and m. Pearl Mae Carpenter,AL, in the area now known as Spruce Pine. From what we understand they were both young teen-agers. At some point early in their marriage they moved back to her home. He used to tell stories to my husband, Ron Madden, who was Will & Pearl's G-grandson, of how they made the trip by way of wagon. My husband was young when they both died so we've never found out about their parents, etc. Ron does remember as a young boy that Grandpa Phifer did not like modern conveniences and never used a modern stove, even though there was one in the house, she always used a wood-burning stove and a wash pot had to be used for her white clothes, because she thought they had to be boiled to be clean. Grandpa Phifer was a deeply religious man and remained so until his death. He had a sister who lived in Aiken,SC, the last many years of her life, although we do not know her na! me. Grandpa and Grandma Phifer died eleven days apart. I think they had been married 60 plus years, and everyone said after he died she grieved herself to death. They died abt. 1963-65. We have their childrens names but no info further back on their families. Also, Grandpa Phifer helped establish SPRUCE PINE POTTERY. If anyone knows any early history on these two people, would love to hear from you. Thanks. Brenda E-Mail:sunsh10295@aol.com
