Query 952
Surnames: SMITH
Submitter: Lavone Major (themajors@mindspring.com)
Date: 13 Mar 2001

I recently found my great grandfather, Wiley SMITH with his wife Elizabeth and 2 yr. old son Wiliam, on the 1860 Tishomingo Co. census. They were living next door to 50 year old E. SMITH, who I suspected might be Wiley's father. On the 1850 census, Wiley (spelle Wilie) is indeed living in the household of E. SMITH and is apparently his son. Unfortunately, the census taker did not spell out E.'s name on either census. I suspect that E. might stand for Ebenezer, since Wiley named one of his sons Richard Ebenezer. The other persons enumerated in E. SMITH's household in 1850 are: Permelia, 45; Levi, 15; Wm., 16; Mary, 12; John, 6; Taylor, 4; Nancy, 10; George, 2; and James, 1. In 1860, there is an additional child, 2 yr. old Calvin. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any information about this SMITH family. (Wiley and Elizabeth and 12 yr. old William I. are in Lake Co., TN in 1870)

I am researching the family of Ebenezer Smith of Tishomingo Co., MS. Ebenezer Smith's name appears on the 1837, 1840, and 1845 censuses. On the 1850 census his household is enumerated as follows: Smith, E. Age 45 Permalia 45 Levi 15 Wm. 16 Wilie 14 Mary 12 John 6 Taylor 4 Nancy 10 George 2 James 1 On the 1860 census, E. Smith has one additional child, Calvin, age 2. Living next door is Ebenezer's son Wiley (Wilie on the 1850 census) with his wife Elizabeth and their 2 year old son William. By 1870, Wiley and Elizabeth were living in Lake Co., TN and by 1880, Elizabeth had died and Wiley had remarried to Julia Cole. Wiley and Julia Cole Smith are my great grandparents. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any information on any or all members of this family.
