In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive
Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in
Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be
indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one
county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection
of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. The USGenWeb Project is
an extension of the KYGenWeb Project. It is an independent project and is No Way a
property of rootsweb/MyFamily.

Disclaimer
- Please Read-
As the volunteer for Pitt County, I am simply the person who puts the page together
and maintains it. I am by no means an expert on genealogy, any individual Pitt County
families, or Pitt County itself. I hope you will understand that I am unable to answer
individual questions about Pitt County history or Pitt County families (other than my
own families that I am linked with on the pages). My purpose is to provide a place where
you can find other researchers and other sources of information. As I find more
information sources, they will be posted. If you have sources to suggest, I hope you
will contact me. I am always on the lookout for additional information. If you have
questions, please send them in the form of queries to be posted.

About Pitt County
Pitt was formed in 1760 from Beaufort County by a legislative act which became
effective January 1,1761. It was named for William Pitt. It is in the eastern part of
North Carolina and is surrounded by Beaufort, Craven, Edgecombe, Greene, Lenoir, Martin,
and Wilson counties.
Courts were first held at the home of John Hardy until a courthouse could be built. The
courthouse was built on Hardy's land near Hardy's Chapel. In 1771 Martinsboro was
established, and in 1774 the courthouse was moved there. In 1787 Martinsboro's name was
changed to Greenville, which is still the county seat.
