John MAYO & Wife To Frederick Hopkins Deed
State of North Carolina Edgecombe County This indenture made this the fifth day
of November in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and Twenty three
between John Mayo and his wife Elizabeth Mayo of the one part and Frederick
Hopkins of the other part both of the state and County aforesaid Showeth that we
the said John Mayo & Elizabeth Mayo have for the consideration of the sum of one
hundred and Twenty Five dollars to us in hand paid by the said Frederick Hopkins
have bargained and sold unto the said Frederick Hopkins a Certain tract of land
lying in the COUNTY OF PITT and the state aforesaid butted and bounded as
follows VIZ Beginning at three gums standing near a fish hole known by the
name of Arnold Hopkins fish hole thence south four and a half degrees west sixty
eight poles to a Black Jack thence north sixty three and a half west one hundred
and fifty nine poles to a Sweet Gum on the run of Coneto Creek thence up the
various courses of the creek to the first station Containing fifty two acres be the
same more or less to have and to hold the above bounded land with the improve-
ments wood and waters and whatsoever is thereunto belonging or appertaining
excepting the widows dower which is laid off ?------ which land and premises we
the said John Mayo and Elizabeth Mayo do for ourselves our executors and
administrators forever quit claim unto the land and warrant and defend the Rights
and Title thereof unto the said Frederick Hopkins to him and to his heirs forever in
Witness whereof we hereunto set our hands and seals the date above written.

November Sessions 1824 then was the above deed proved in due form of law by the
oath of John Hopkins a subscribing witness there to set a commission ?---- to take
the private examination of Elizabeth Mayo.

This day Elizabeth Mayo wife of John Mayo came before us Jesse LITTLE &
Daniel HOPKINS two of the Justices of the peace for the county of Edgecombe &
upon private Examination respecting the sale of the lands contained in the within deed
she sayeth that she sold the said land and premises & executed the deed willingly &
freely & without compulsion in any wise taken under our hands and seals this 29
November 1823 -----

ADDENDUM:

Elizabeth Peninne Hopkins MAYO was the d/o Arnold Hopkins and his 1st wife,
name unknown to me, she was also the 3rd wife of John Mayo.
Daniel and Frederick Hopkins I believe were younger brothers of Arnold Hopkins.
