He is buried in the Smith Cemetery off Ebenezer Church Road just off Hwy. 70 east. He has a Union soldier head marker but no date of death or birth is given. Head marker reads Henry Myers Company A 2nd Maryland Inf. Date of death could have been between the years of 1914 to 1935 at the very latest. Please help this has been an ongoing mystery now for over 6 months. Why and how did a Union soldier get buried in a family cemetery with a confederate soldier "Isaac Seth Smith". I've got to believe that there has to be some kind of paper trail in Goldsboro for this man. He may have lived with the "Kirby Smith" family whose house is only 1/4 mile from the burial site. I'd like to have this family cemetery listed for the web page of Wayne County. There are over 30 people believed to be buried in this now restored family cemetery. DATE: May 07 2001
QRYTEXT: My father, Francis Michaux Hiss, a World War I veteran, died in April 1938 after a long bout with tuberculosis. I never got to know him well but I have been searching for information about his life ever since. Recently I've run across a number of documents that suggest that he may have been born in Wayne County in Mount Olive on 12 December 1895. Since there seems no reason to believe such a statement, I was prone to ignore it; now, however, it appears that this may be true after all. He was the nephew of Flora Long (Mrs. Claude)Summerlin of Mount Olive and also related--I'm still not sure how--to Nicholas Long and his wife, Martha E. Aaron, all also from Mount Olive. Two queries: I know that North Carolina did not start official birth registration until the early years of the 20th century but are there other sources which could be checked in looking for a record of Frank's birth? He and his widowed mother lived in Mount Olive until 1911 (with the exception of several months spent in Virginia at the time of the 1900 census). They subsequently left North Carolina for Richmond, Virginia late in 1911. Since I am now living in central Illinois and can't just pop in to the county at will, any help that anyone can suggest would be very deeply appreciated. Many thanks, Nancy H. Holsinger

He is shown on the 1850 Crawford County, IL census as a 51 year old farmer with 600 acres and as being born in NC. With him at that time, were Sarah 23 and Fairy 17 - both born in NC. The others were Elizabeth, James H. and Edmond - all born in NC. James must have married again because he was the father of my ggrandmother, Martha Ellen Cox, born in 1854. DATE: Oct 17 2000
QRYTEXT: Does anyone know where I could find church records 1750-1850 regarding births, marriages and deaths of Wayne County residents? I am particularly trying to find the marriage record of a Drusellah/Drusilla STEVENS/STEPHENS to a -----COOPER ca. 1805-1810. She was the daughter of John and Mary STEVENS/STEPHENS, and had a son William S. Cooper born 1810, based upon her fathers will and his Family Bible Records. I realize the couple could have been wed in churches or by pastors in the area from which Sampson Co. was made or the surrounding counties. The marriage could have been performed by one of the Rev. COOPERs, Fleet or William, or by Rev. Edward Brown, as it appears that the Mr. Cooper in question was related to the Rev. Coopers and Miss Stevens/Stephens was related to Rev. Brown. Best Regards, Gary

QRYTEXT: Does anyone have information on a family living in Wayne Co NC in 1860. Their names were John H Crawford,28 yrs old, student dentist. In 1850 I find him in Johnston Co and he is listed as a grocer. His wife was Patience Crawford, 28 yrs old. Her maiden name was Stevens and I am pretty sure that Jacob Stevens was her father. They had two children John W. Crawford 3yrs and Charles Crawford 10 months. I think John H. Crawford died during the Civil War. I have no idea what happened to Patience after about 1864 when I find her name on some land deeds. I think their son John W. Crawford was my great grandfather and he and his brother Charles were brought to GA between 1865 and 1870. Patience probable died during this time period. Any help that anyone can give me will be so much appreciated. I have been trying to find where my great grandfather came from for a long time.
